Sketching a function graph uses key features of the function to show its overall shape. A function plots as a curve on the coordinate plane, with the input on the horizontal axis and the output on the vertical axis. The first step is to find the domain, which is the set of input values where the function is defined. The domain shows how far the graph can extend left and right.

Intercepts are also important reference points. The x-intercept is where the graph crosses the horizontal axis, and the y-intercept is where it crosses the vertical axis. Symmetry can make the graph easier to analyze. A graph may be symmetric about the vertical axis or about the origin, which means less information is needed to describe the curve.

The next step is to study what happens as the input becomes very large or very small. This limiting behavior can show vertical or horizontal asymptotes. An asymptote is a line that the graph approaches and uses as a boundary for its long-term shape. These features help guide the sketch, especially near the edges of the domain.

The first derivative gives information about slope. When the slope is positive, the function is increasing. When the slope is negative, the function is decreasing. Points where the slope is zero or undefined are critical points. These points can mark local maximum or local minimum values, where the graph changes direction.

Curvature gives another layer of detail. It describes whether the graph bends upward or downward, which is called concavity. A graph can have concave regions where the bending stays the same. Points where the bending changes are inflection points. A logistic growth model shows these ideas well. It starts with fast growth, then slows as limiting factors act on it. The curve levels off near a horizontal asymptote that represents a maximum sustainable population, and it has an inflection point that creates the S-shaped form.
