Lorsqu’une courbe ne peut pas être écrite en isolant une variable, une différentiation implicite est utilisée pour en déterminer la pente et le comportement.Un exemple unique est le conchoïde de Nicomède, dans lequel x et y ne peuvent pas être isolés.Cette interdépendance rend la différenciation implicite essentielle pour découvrir sa pente et son comportement à un point donné.La solution commence par traiter une variable comme dépendante et appliquer la règle du produit à chaque terme des deux côtés de la relation. Implicit Differentiation: Problem Solving

Implicit differentiation is used to find the slope of a curve when x and y cannot be separated easily. The conchoid of Nicomedes is one example of such a curve. Its equation links x and y in a way that makes solving for one variable difficult, so a special method is needed to study the curve.

To work with the conchoid, y is treated as a function of x. The chain rule is then applied to any term that contains y. The derivative is taken on both sides of the equation, which introduces dy/dx terms.

Each term must be handled with the correct rule. The product rule is used when terms are multiplied, and the quotient rule is used when terms are written as a ratio. After all derivatives are found, the terms containing dy/dx are collected together.

The equation is then rearranged to solve for dy/dx. This gives a single expression for how y changes with respect to x at a point on the curve. When specific coordinates are substituted into that expression, the slope at that location can be found.

That slope is then paired with the point to write the tangent line in point-slope form. The tangent line shows the instantaneous direction of the curve at that point. In this way, implicit differentiation reveals local behavior for complex curves like the conchoid, even when no explicit algebraic solution is available.
