Prenons l’exemple d’une voiture qui entre dans un parking et qui facture le temps passé à l’intérieur.Cette situation peut être décrite à l’aide d’une fonction, c’est-à-dire d’une règle qui attribue un coût spécifique pour chaque heure de stationnement.Le domaine de définition de la fonction, c’est-à-dire l’ensemble de toutes les entrées valides, est celui des heures non négatives, une contrainte physique puisque le temps ne peut pas être négatif.Au fil des heures, le coût total augmente d’autant, formant un modèle prévisible et régulier.Cette fonction peut être représentée de quatre manières : verbale, algébrique, visuelle et numérique, chacune montrant comment les entrées se connectent aux sorties.Le formulaire verbal indique que le coût de l’inscription est de quatre dollars plus trois dollars de l’heure.Cette relation est écrite sous la forme d’une formule dans laquelle les frais de base sont combinés à des frais qui augmentent de trois pour chaque heure.La forme visuelle est une intrigue qui commence à quatre heures et s’élève régulièrement avec le temps.La forme numérique est une table qui fait correspondre les valeurs de domaine (heures non négatives) aux valeurs de plage, qui sont les coûts totaux.Un autre exemple de fonction est le changement d’altitude d’un sentier de randonnée, avec la distance en entrée et l’altitude en sortie.
