Shifting function graphs changes their position on the coordinate plane without changing their overall shape. These transformations help move a graph while keeping its pattern and structure the same. Shifting is one of the most common graph transformations.

When a constant is added to or subtracted from the output of a function, the graph shifts vertically. A positive change moves the graph upward. A negative change moves it downward. This is like raising or lowering the height of a telescopic fountain nozzle. Lifting the nozzle sends the arc of water higher, just as increasing the output raises the graph. Lowering the nozzle drops the arc, just as reducing the output shifts the graph down.

Changing the input value creates a horizontal shift. If the input increases before the function uses it, the graph moves to the left. If the input is decreased, the graph shifts to the right. This is similar to moving the fountain nozzle sideways. Moving it left shifts the arc left, and moving it right shifts the arc right. These shifts change where the graph appears, but they do not change its overall shape.
