Prenons l’exemple d’une échelle posée contre un mur sur un chantier de construction. Right triangle trigonometry uses sine, cosine, and tangent to connect an acute angle with the sides of the triangle. These trig ratios describe how side lengths relate to one another in right-angled geometry. They give a clear way to measure the links between angles and sides.

Sine compares the side opposite an angle to the hypotenuse. Cosine compares the side adjacent to the angle to the hypotenuse. Tangent compares the opposite side to the adjacent side. Each ratio depends on the angle, not on the triangle’s size.

Triangles with the same acute angle have the same trig ratios because of similarity in geometry. Similar triangles have matching angles and proportional side lengths. That is why sine, cosine, and tangent keep fixed values for a given acute angle, even when the triangles are different sizes.

For acute angles in a right triangle, sine and cosine always stay between zero and one. These patterns make trig ratios useful for finding unknown sides or unknown angles in right triangle problems. They also support algebraic problem solving in geometry.

These ratios are used beyond right triangles as well. When extended to the unit circle, they can describe angles of any measure. That extension helps model waves, rotations, and oscillations in physics, engineering, and signal processing.
