Certaines fonctions sont limitées entre deux autres fonctions, qui déterminent leur valeur limite.Le théorème de compression s’applique lorsqu’une fonction reste bornée entre deux autres fonctions sur un intervalle, généralement noté I, près d’un point, et que les deux fonctions englobantes s’approchent de la même valeur. Dans cet intervalle, la fonction contrainte entre elles doit également partager cette limite.Cela crée un chemin de rétrécissement, maintenant la courbe interne coincée entre les deux autres fonctions près d’un point spécifique.Considérons la fonction x² multipliée par le cosinus de 20πx.Lorsque x tend vers zéro, la fonction converge vers zéro.Comme le cosinus est toujours borné entre -1 et 1, la multiplication par x² fait osciller le produit à l’intérieur des enveloppes -x² et x², quelle que soit sa fréquence.Par conséquent, la fonction entière reste entre deux fonctions englobantes : –x² et x².Les deux fonctions englobantes tendent vers zéro lorsque x tend vers zéro, de sorte que la fonction du milieu tend également vers zéro, comme défini par le théorème de compression.Ce théorème apparaît également dans les logiciels d’ingénierie, où les estimations de contraintes sont délimitées entre les limites supérieure et inférieure. Le rapprochement des fonctions bornes r&#233;duit effectivement l&#8217;intervalle dans lequel la fonction encadr&#233;e peut se situer, et la contraint &#224; la m&#234;me valeur limite.
La condition essentielle d&#8217;application est que la fonction consid&#233;r&#233;e reste toujours sup&#233;rieure ou &#233;gale &#224; une borne inf&#233;rieure et inf&#233;rieure ou &#233;gale &#224; une borne sup&#233;rieure au voisinage du point &#233;tudi&#233;. Si ces deux bornes convergent vers la m&#234;me valeur, la fonction interm&#233;diaire partage ce comportement de convergence, quelle que soit sa complexit&#233; interne. Ce principe est particuli&#232;rement utile lorsque la fonction ne se pr&#234;te pas ais&#233;ment aux techniques classiques en raison d&#8217;un comportement tr&#232;s erratique.

The Squeeze Theorem

Using bounds to find a limit is the main idea behind the Squeeze Theorem. It helps when a function changes in a way that makes direct limit evaluation difficult. Some functions may oscillate quickly or follow irregular patterns near a specific input value.

The theorem works by placing the function between two other functions near that point. The function must stay greater than or equal to a lower bound and less than or equal to an upper bound. If both outer functions approach the same limit as the input gets closer to the point, the function in the middle must approach that same limit too.

This converging behavior narrows the range of possible values for the trapped function. As the boundaries move toward the same number, the intermediate function is forced toward that number as well. The Squeeze Theorem is especially useful for limits that are hard to approach with standard methods because the function behaves erratically.
