Differential calculus helps describe how a quantity changes at a specific point. A moving car on a winding road gives a clear example. The car’s path is a continuous curve, and the direction it travels at any instant is shown by the tangent to that curve.

A secant line, by contrast, crosses the curve at two points. It shows how the car’s position changes over an interval, so it describes average behavior rather than an instant. The slope of the secant line between two points on a function f(x) is a ratio that gives the average rate of change over that interval.

As the point x+h moves closer to x, the secant line smoothly becomes the tangent line. This idea leads to the tangent line problem, which asks for the instantaneous rate of change at one point on the curve. The slope of the tangent line is the limit of the secant slope as h approaches 0, and this limit is the derivative f′(x).

Once the slope is known, the tangent line equation can be written with point-slope form at the point (x₀, f(x₀)). This equation shows the direction and rate of change of the function at that exact point. It is an important tool in math modeling in physics, engineering, biology, and economics, where predicting instantaneous trends matters.
