Higher derivatives show how a function changes from one step to the next. In calculus, the first derivative gives the slope of a graph, and the second derivative shows how that slope is changing. These ideas help explain both the shape of a curve and the motion of an object.

For the example function f(x) = x^3 - x, the first derivative is f'(x) = 3x^2 - 1. The second derivative is f''(x) = 6x. In this case, the second derivative is a linear function, so the slope changes at a steady rate.

Differentiating again gives a constant third derivative. The fourth derivative becomes zero. This sequence shows how successive derivatives can describe a function in more detail as you keep differentiating.

The second derivative also tells us about concavity. It shows whether a graph curves upward or downward. For the given example, the graph is concave up where the second derivative is positive and concave down where the second derivative is negative. A constant third derivative means the concavity changes at a uniform rate.

Higher derivatives also appear in physics. For position, the first derivative is velocity, the second is acceleration, and the third derivative is called jerk. Jerk is the rate of change of acceleration. These ideas are useful for studying smooth motion in systems such as vehicle dynamics and robotics.

Higher derivatives can continue without a limit. The nth derivative gives even more detailed information about a function’s behavior. These derivatives also become important later in topics such as Taylor series, where they help approximate complex functions and model physical systems.
