This reverses peaks and troughs, much like signal inversion in electrical systems, where a waveform is flipped but its timing stays the same. Reversing the sign of the input variable makes the graph mirror left to right, which is a reflection over the vertical axis. That idea is similar to reversing the input direction of a waveform. The shape and amplitude stay the same, but its progression changes.

Another transformation is vertical stretching. In this case, all output values are multiplied by a factor greater than one. The graph becomes taller, but its horizontal position stays the same. This is similar to increasing the gain in an amplifier circuit, which makes a signal stronger without changing its structure.

Horizontal compression works in the opposite direction across the input. It uses a factor greater than one to scale the input values, which squeezes the graph sideways. Features move closer together, but the overall pattern remains. This is like compressing a spring along its length, where the spaces between repeating parts shrink while the pattern is preserved.
