Les fonctions logarithmiques et par morceaux sont deux types essentiels de fonctions mathématiques.Une fonction logarithmique est l’inverse d’une fonction exponentielle et se reflète sur la droite y égale x. Les fonctions exponentielles commencent lentement puis grandissent rapidement, tandis que les fonctions logarithmiques augmentent rapidement au début, puis ralentissent.Ce comportement permet de représenter plus facilement les grandes différences numériques à l’aide de la mise à l’échelle logarithmique.Par exemple, l’échelle de pH, qui mesure l’acidité ou la basicité, utilise une échelle logarithmique.Chaque unité sur l’échelle de pH représente une variation de dix fois de la concentration en ions hydrogène.D’autre part, une fonction par morceaux utilise des règles différentes pour différentes sections de son graphique, et ces règles peuvent changer soudainement en fonction de l’entrée.Par exemple, le prix d’un taxi peut augmenter par paliers fixes à mesure que la distance parcourue augmente.Le graphique d’une fonction par morceaux se présente sous la forme de segments de droite ou de courbes distincts, chaque segment suivant sa propre règle.Les fonctions par morceaux sont utiles pour modéliser des situations impliquant des sauts, des ruptures ou des comportements variables sur différentes plages d’entrée.

Logarithmic and piecewise functions help model real-world situations in different ways. A logarithmic function is the inverse of an exponential function. Its graph rises quickly for small x values and then flattens as x gets larger. This makes logarithms useful when data spans several orders of magnitude.

Logarithmic scales compress large ranges into compact numbers. One common example is the pH scale in chemistry. It is written as pH = −log10[H+], where [H+] is the hydrogen ion concentration. A one-unit drop in pH means a tenfold increase in acidity. Logarithmic functions also appear in information theory, sound intensity measured in decibels, and population dynamics.

Piecewise functions work differently. They are made of multiple sub-functions, and each one applies to a specific interval of the domain. In a general piecewise function, each fi(x) gives the output for its own range of x values. This setup allows a function to change abruptly when the input crosses a boundary.

A simple real-world example is a taxi fare. The ride may start with a flat base rate for the first mile and then add a fixed amount for each extra mile. The graph of a piecewise function often looks like line segments with different slopes. These functions are useful in economics, engineering, and computer science, especially when a system has thresholds, cutoffs, or conditional rules.
