תרכובות ארומטיות הן פחמימנים עם קשרי π מצומדים המוקפים בטבעת. בנזן ונגזרותיו הם הדוגמאות הידועות ביותר לתרכובות ארומטיות.
במקור, נגזרות בנזן בודדו משמנים טבעיים המיוצרים על ידי צמחים ועצים וכונו "ארומטיים" בשל ריחם הייחודי.
לדוגמה, לבנזלדהיד משקדים ודובדבנים, לטולואן מטולו בלסם ולאוג'נול מציפורן יש ריחות שונים.
עם הזמן, המונח ארומטי המשיך לתאר את כל נגזרות הבנזן, ללא קשר אם הן ריחניות או לא. לדוגמה, אספירין משכך כאבים מכיל חומצה אצטילסליצילית, תרכובת ארומטית חסרת ריח.

 	 באופן כללי, המונח 'ארומטי' מצביע על ריח נעים או ניחוח מפרחים טריים, קפה טרי שהוכן וכדומה. בהיסטוריה המוקדמת של הכימיה האורגנית בודדו נגזרות בנזן רבות משמני הריח הנעימים של הצמחים. לדוגמה, ונילין בודד משמן וניל, מתיל סליצילט משמן חורף ירוק וקיננאמלדהיד משמן קינמון. לכולם היה ריח נעים; מכאן ניתן השם ארומטי. 

 	 בשנת 1825, פאראדיי בודד בנזן מגז מאיר דחוס (הדלק נשרף בפנסי גז) וכינה אותו "ביקרבורט של מימן". הוא גם ביצע ניתוח יסודי של התרכובת וצפה ביחס של 1:1 בין מימן לפחמן. 

 מאוחר יותר, אילהרדט מיטשרליך סינתז בנזן מחומצה בנזואית (מבודדת מבנזואין מסטיק) ותחמוצת סידן בשנת 1834. על ידי עריכת מדידות צפיפות אדים, הוא הראה שהנוסחה המולקולרית של בנזן היא C_6H_6. מכיוון שהתרכובת החדשה נגזרה ממסטיק בנזואין, הוא קרא לה בנזין, הידוע כיום בשם בנזן. הוא משמש כממס מעבדה.

 תרכובות ארומטיות מתקבלות בעיקר מפחם ומנפט. פחם מייצר זפת פחם כשהוא מחומם ל-1000 מעלות צלזיוס בהיעדר אוויר. זפת פחם, לאחר זיקוק חלקי, מייצרת פחמימנים ארומטיים רבים כגון בנזן, טולואן, דימתיל בנזן (קסילן), נפתלין, ביפניל, אינן, אנתראצן וכו'. 

 עם זאת, לא ניתן להשיג תרכובות ארומטיות ישירות מנפט. במהלך זיקוק נפט, האלקנים מומרים לתרכובות ארומטיות בנוכחות זרז ב-500 מעלות צלזיוס בלחץ גבוה.

Aromatic compounds are linked to both pleasant smells and important chemical structures. The word aromatic first came from fragrant natural sources such as fresh flowers and spices. Early organic chemists isolated benzene derivatives from oils of plants, including vanillin from vanilla, methyl salicylate from wintergreen, and cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon.

The history of benzene also helped shape the idea of aromatic compounds. In 1825, Faraday isolated benzene from compressed illuminating gas, which was used in gaslights. He called it bicarburet of hydrogen and found a 1:1 ratio of hydrogen to carbon. In 1834, Eilhardt Mitscherlich made benzene from benzoic acid, which comes from gum benzoin, and calcium oxide. He used vapor density measurements to show that benzene has the formula C6H6, and he named it Benzin, now called benzene.

Today, the term aromatic includes many benzene derivatives, even when they do not smell pleasant. Benzene itself is used as a laboratory solvent. Many natural and pharmaceutical compounds are aromatic, including estrone, atorvastatin (Lipitor), Zoloft, and Serevent.

Aromatic compounds are mainly obtained from coal and petroleum. When coal is heated to 1000 °C without air, it forms coal tar. Fractional distillation of coal tar gives aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, biphenyl, indene, and anthracene. Aromatic compounds are not taken directly from petroleum, but petroleum refining can convert alkanes into aromatic compounds with a catalyst at 500 °C under high pressure.
