Papillary Dermis

The papillary layer is the thin outermost dermal layer, consisting of loosely interwoven collagen and elastin fibers.&#160;
This region has a rich supply of capillary networks called the subpapillary plexus. Nutrients diffuse through these capillaries into the cells of the stratum basale, the deepest layer of the epidermis and help the keratinocytes to grow and develop.
In addition, this region is enriched with the lymphatic system, nerve fibers, and phagocytes.
Dermal papillae also have free nerve endings and touch receptors called Meissner&#39;s corpuscles.
The surface area of this layer is increased by the nipple-shaped structures called dermal papillae that project into the overlying epidermis, interdigitating with rete pegs.
In contrast to the thin skin, which has few and smaller papillae, the thick skin of the palm and sole has closely placed and much larger papillae resulting in prominent ridges and grooves organized in curved parallel lines.

The dermis might be considered the &#34;core&#34; of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.
Papillary Layer
The papillary layer is made of loose, areolar connective tissue, which means the collagen and elastin fibers of this layer form a loose mesh. This superficial layer of the dermis projects into the stratum basale of the epidermis to form finger-like dermal papillae. Within the papillary layer are fibroblasts, a small number of fat cells (adipocytes), and an abundance of small blood vessels. In addition, the papillary layer contains phagocytes, defensive cells that help fight bacteria or other infections that have breached the skin. This layer also contains lymphatic capillaries, nerve fibers, and touch receptors called the Meissner corpuscles.

The papillary layer is the outer part of the dermis. It is made of loose, areolar connective tissue, so its collagen and elastin fibers form a loose mesh. This layer sits next to the epidermis and helps show how the skin is organized into distinct layers.

The papillary layer projects into the stratum basale of the epidermis. These finger-like extensions are called dermal papillae. Inside this layer are fibroblasts, a small number of adipocytes, and many small blood vessels. It also contains lymphatic capillaries, nerve fibers, and touch receptors called Meissner corpuscles.

The papillary layer also includes phagocytes. These are defensive cells that help fight bacteria or other infections that have passed through the skin. The dermis as a whole is the skin's core layer, and it also contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, hair follicles, and sweat glands. Its connective tissue fibers are made by fibroblasts and form an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagen.

Content elaboration: The integumentary system consists of skin and accessory structures. The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis (subcutaneous layer). The accessory structures can include sweat glands, sebaceous glands, arrector pili muscles, hair follicles and nails. Skin functions include protection, temperature regulation, excretion and sensory perception. These occur through the processes of perspiration, skin production and shedding, vitamin D synthesis and repair. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, burns, skin cancer, anhidrosis, acne, eczema or scleroderma. Investigations are used to understand and explain the integumentary system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

There are four main cell types that compose bone tissue, each with a specific function: osteogenic cells, osteocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The microscopic anatomy of compact bone includes osteons. Bones are classified by their shape. The structure of a typical long bone can be explored. Specific bones of the skeleton can be studied by their subdivisions: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. Cartilage is found in areas of the nose, ears, ribs and joints. Joints can be classified by structure or by function. The general structure of synovial joints may be explored. Ligaments connect bone to bone, stabilizing joints. The skeletal system provides support for the human body, protects soft organs, allows for movement due to attachment of muscles, stores minerals and fat and forms blood cells. Processes of the skeletal system include hematopoiesis, ossification and bone growth and remodeling. A comparison of male to female, juvenile to adult or human to other vertebrate skeletons may be explored. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, osteoporosis, malnutrition, fractures, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and arthritis. Investigations are used to understand and explain the skeletal system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
