Primary distribution systems move electrical power from substations to consumers. They use several voltage classes, and 15-kV class voltages are the most common among U.S. utilities. Older 2.5-kV and 5-kV primaries are being replaced by 15-kV systems. Higher 25-kV to 34.5-kV classes are used in dense urban areas and in rural regions with long feeders.

Many primary systems use three-phase, four-wire multigrounded lines. In this setup, the neutral wire serves as a grounding point. Substations often use star-connected transformers to step voltage down efficiently and provide grounding. Delta systems are also used, especially in older or industrial areas.

The line hardware depends on the setting. Rural areas usually rely on overhead lines with distribution transformers, fuses, and switches mounted on poles. Urban areas often use underground cable systems. These cables cost more to install, but they improve reliability and reduce weather-related outages while also fitting better with city landscapes.

Primary distribution can be arranged as radial, loop, or network systems. Radial systems are common in low-load-density areas. Their feeders extend outward from a substation, so they are simple and economical, but reliability is limited. Reclosers and sectionalizing switches can help isolate faults and improve service.

Loop systems are used where higher reliability is needed. Their feeders form a loop and connect back to the substation. This design helps keep power flowing and gives utilities more flexibility when managing loads or isolating faults. Primary network systems are common in urban areas with high load density. They offer the highest reliability and service quality by linking several substations with interconnected feeders. Faults in these systems are isolated by circuit breakers and fuses.

Electric Power Flow from Plant to Home

Electric power distribution moves electricity from power plants to homes, businesses, and industry through transmission and distribution networks. Power plants convert energy from coal, gas, nuclear, water, and wind into electrical energy.
