Frequency-Domain Interpretation of PD Control

PD control changes how a fan responds to speed errors. A fan control system can be modeled with a Bode plot, which shows the transfer function across different frequencies. This makes it easier to see how the proportional-derivative controller acts in the frequency domain.

The proportional gain, together with the system’s series gain, normalizes the controller gain at zero frequency. The Bode plot also shows that a PD controller works like a high-pass filter. It boosts the high-frequency parts of the error signal and reduces the low-frequency parts.

That high-pass behavior raises the gain-crossover frequency. Because of that, the corner frequency must be placed carefully to improve phase margin. PD control also increases damping in the fan speed response. It lowers overshoot and oscillations and helps the fan reach the target speed faster and settle more quickly.

The stronger damping comes from the controller’s ability to anticipate changes in the error signal and counter them early. This makes the control system more responsive and more stable. PD control also widens the bandwidth, so the fan can be controlled well over a larger range of speeds.

A wider bandwidth improves Gain Margin, Phase Margin, and Resonant Peak. These stability measures help the fan run consistently under changing operating conditions. At the same time, the high-pass nature of PD control can amplify high-frequency noise, which may disturb smooth fan control. The physical design may also need a large capacitor, which can add size and cost to the system.
