pi controller gains and error correction

A PI controller uses proportional and integral action to correct error in a control system. PI stands for proportional integral. It is used in modern control systems to improve performance and reduce steady-state error, which is the small error that remains after a system settles.

PI controllers are useful in step-input situations such as automatic brightness adjustment on smartphones. They can handle residual steady-state error that the proportional part alone does not remove. Unlike PD controllers, which work best with time-varying errors, PI controllers use the integral term to remove this leftover error.

In an op-amp-based PI controller, resistors and a capacitor process the error signal and produce a control signal. The resistor provides the proportional feedback. The capacitor provides the integral response.

Two-op-amp and three-op-amp circuit designs have different transfer functions. In the three-op-amp design, the proportional gain and integral gain can be adjusted independently through circuit parameters. In both circuits, the integral gain is inversely proportional to the capacitor value, so effective PI control may require a large capacitor.

A PI controller changes the forward-path transfer function by adding a zero and a pole. This can improve system performance and reduce steady-state error by an order of magnitude. When the steady-state error for a given input is constant, the PI controller can reduce it to zero if the compensated system stays stable.
