Distribution reliability in electric power systems helps keep electricity flowing with as few outages as possible and at minimal cost. In IEEE standard terms, reliability is the chance that a device will work without failure over a set time or amount of use. For power distribution, that means steady service and fewer customer concerns about blackouts.

Engineers use several IEEE Standard 1366-2012 indices to measure how well a distribution system performs. SAIFI, or System Average Interruption Frequency Index, shows the average number of outages a customer has in a year. SAIDI, or System Average Interruption Duration Index, gives the average total outage time for each customer. CAIDI shows the average outage time for each customer who was actually interrupted. ASAI, or Average Service Availability Index, shows the fraction of time power is available.

These indices leave out momentary interruptions that last less than five minutes. They also leave out major events such as severe storms. That helps the metrics focus on normal reliability performance rather than rare extreme conditions.

Distribution automation, or DA, uses technology to monitor, control, and automate the electric distribution system. Early DA systems used simple meters and telecommunication tools to track voltage and power flow. Modern DA systems use advanced sensors, automated controls, and Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition, or SCADA, systems.

DA can give operators remote control of the system, or it can automate the entire switch management process. That helps isolate faults quickly and restore service faster after an outage. It also improves voltage management and makes the distribution network work more efficiently. As a result, DA can reduce outage duration and improve overall reliability.

Electric Power Flow from Plant to Home

Electric power distribution moves electricity from power plants to homes, businesses, and industry through transmission and distribution networks. Power plants convert energy from coal, gas, nuclear, water, and wind into electrical energy. They use three-phase generators, often rated from 50 to 1300 MVA, with terminal voltages from a few kV to 20 kV depending on the unit size and age.
