Geometry of Hyperbolas

A hyperbola is a curve defined by two fixed points called foci. For any point on the curve, the absolute difference in its distances to the foci stays constant. This distance rule gives the hyperbola its shape and separates it from other conic sections.

The standard equation shows two branches that extend forever. Each branch moves closer to two asymptotes, which are lines that guide the curve as it grows. The parameters a and b control key features of the graph. The value a measures the distance from the center to each vertex along the transverse axis. The value b affects the slopes of the asymptotes.

A useful way to locate the asymptotes is to draw a rectangle centered at the origin. The rectangle has dimensions 2a by 2b. When you extend its diagonals, you get the asymptotes. Their equations match the slope pattern shown by the rectangle.

The hyperbola also has an eccentricity, written with c, that is always greater than 1. Eccentricity describes how open the hyperbola is. The foci are placed at (±c, 0). With the equation simplified, the graph is easier to plot and analyze.

Hyperbolas appear in real systems that use mirrors and precise direction. Hyperbolic mirrors help focus light in optical setups such as Cassegrain telescopes, which improves image clarity. The same geometry is useful in astronomy, engineering, and navigation, where accurate directional behavior matters.
