<h4>Panoramica</h4>

Le cellule gliali sono uno dei due principali tipi di cellule nel sistema nervoso. Le cellule di Glia comprendono astrociti, oligodendrociti, microglia e cellule ependimali nel sistema nervoso centrale, e cellule satellite e di Schwann nel sistema nervoso periferico. Queste cellule non comunicano tramite segnali elettrici come fanno i neuroni, ma contribuiscono praticamente a tutti gli altri aspetti della funzione del sistema nervoso. Nell'uomo, il numero di cellule gliali è approssimativamente uguale al numero di neuroni nel cervello.

<h4>Cellule gliali del sistema nervoso centrale</h4>

Glia nel sistema nervoso centrale (CNS) includono astrociti, oligodendrociti, microglia, e cellule ependimal. Gli astrociti sono il tipo più abbondante di cellule gliali e si trovano in modelli organizzati e non sovrapposti in tutto il cervello, dove si associano strettamente a neuroni e capillari. Proteggono il SNC da agenti infettivi e tossine e sfoltisce le sinapsi durante lo sviluppo. Anche se le microglia sono considerate cellule gliali, hanno un'origine unica e separata rispetto ad altri tipi di cellule gliali. Gli astrociti e gli oligodendrociti sono prodotti dalla glia radiale, mentre la microglia proviene dal sacco del tuorlo e migra nell'embrione all'inizio dello sviluppo embrionale.

Nel sistema nervoso periferico (PNS) esistono tipi simili ma distinti di cellule gliali. Ad esempio, le funzioni eseguite dagli astrociti del CNS sono realizzate nel PNS principalmente da cellule satellitari, cellule gliali che forniscono struttura, ammortizzazione e sostanze nutritive ai corpi neuronali a cui si associano. Un'altra cellula gliale PNS, la cellula di Schwann, funziona come gli oligodendrociti del CNS formando una guaina di mielina intorno agli assoni neuronali. <h4>Importanza della Glia nella salute e nella malattia</h4>

Le cellule gliali sono protezioni e regolatori critici del sistema nervoso. Non solo mantengono condizioni omeostatiche e contribuiscono alla funzione cerebrale di routine, ma rispondono anche alle lesioni del sistema nervoso, infezione, e malattia. Inoltre, glia svolgono funzioni critiche durante lo sviluppo embrionale del sistema nervoso. Queste cellule contribuiscono anche alla rimozione di connessioni neuronali non necessarie, un processo chiamato potatura sinaptica. A causa dell'importanza della glia in numerosi aspetti della funzione cerebrale, i difetti in una o più popolazioni di cellule gliali possono portare a condizioni neurologiche gravi e debilitanti, tra cui disturbi dello sviluppo, morbo di Alzheimer, morbo di Parkinson, sclerosi multipla e molti altri.

Durante lo sviluppo, le cellule gliali forniscono un'impalcatura per i neuroni per migrare correttamente e crescere i loro assoni. Glial Cells

Glial cells support the nervous system and work alongside neurons. They are one of the two main cell types in the nervous system. Unlike neurons, glia do not send electrical signals, but they help with nearly every other part of nervous system function. In humans, glial cells are about as numerous as neurons in the brain.

In the central nervous system, glia include astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, and ependymal cells. Astrocytes are the most common glial cells. They form organized, non-overlapping patterns in the brain and stay close to neurons and capillaries. They help regulate blood flow, support metabolism, maintain ion and pH balance around synapses, and help maintain the blood-brain barrier.

Oligodendrocytes make the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. This sheath wraps around neuronal axons many times and acts as insulation. Myelin helps nerve signals travel correctly and much faster. Microglia are the smallest glial cells and are known as the macrophages of the CNS. They remove pathogens and debris by phagocytosis and also help prune synapses during development. Unlike other glia, microglia come from the yolk sac and enter the embryo early in development.

Ependymal cells are cube-shaped cells with cilia-like projections that line the ventricles. They produce cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF, and form a barrier between the brain and the CSF. This barrier helps filter out harmful substances. Like astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells come from radial glia near the lateral ventricles.

The peripheral nervous system also has glial cells. Satellite cells support the neuronal cell bodies they surround by providing structure, cushioning, and nutrients. Schwann cells do for peripheral axons what oligodendrocytes do in the CNS. They form myelin around axons and help insulation and conductivity for electrical signaling.

Glia are important for health, development, and disease. They protect the nervous system, keep internal conditions stable, and respond to injury, infection, and disease. They also help guide neuron migration and axon growth during embryonic development. Because they help remove extra neuronal connections through synaptic pruning, problems in glial cells can contribute to developmental disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and other serious conditions. Damage later in life can also lead to lost connections that are difficult or impossible to replace, which may cause impaired function or paralysis.
