Ci sono stati cinque grandi eventi di estinzione in tutta la storia geologica, con conseguente eliminazione della biodiversità, seguiti da un rimbalzo di specie che si sono adattate alle nuove condizioni. Nell'attuale epoca geologica, l'Olocene, c'è un sesto evento di estinzione in corso. Nel 2019 la popolazione umana ha raggiunto 7,7 miliardi di persone e si prevede che compirà 10 miliardi entro il 2060. Indicativo del nostro impatto, per biomassa (la massa effettiva di una particolare specie), gli esseri umani costituiscono il 36% dei mammiferi della Terra, il bestiame 60% e i mammiferi selvatici solo il 4%. Circa il 70% di tutti gli uccelli sono pollame, quindi solo il 30% sono selvatici.

Per ridurre al minimo l'impatto umano sulla biodiversità e sul clima, dobbiamo capire quali delle nostre attività sono problematiche e bilanciare le esigenze della civiltà umana e progredire con un piano sostenibile per le generazioni future. Alcune delle principali minacce alla biodiversità includono la perdita di habitat a causa dello sviluppo umano, dell'esagimento eccessivo e dell'aumento delle emissioni di anidride carbonica provenienti da fabbriche e veicoli.

<h4>Casi di studio</h4>

Un caso di studio sull'impatto umano sul tempo può essere trovato nell'evento degli anni '30 noto come Dust Bowl. Negli anni '20 e '30, un gran numero di agricoltori si trasferì nelle Grandi Pianure e ripulirono la terra, rimuovendo le piante di copertura del terreno autoctono al fine di piantare le loro piante da coltura, che generalmente hanno sistemi di radici poco profonde. In un'area centrata nel Kansas e nel Texas settentrionale e che si estende a nord verso il Canada e il sud attraverso il Texas, una combinazione di condizioni di siccità estrema e pratiche agricole mal considerate ha provocato tempeste di polvere che hanno depositato detriti fino agli stati nord-orientali. In definitiva, a causa di queste tempeste, e l'economia depressa che purtroppo ha coinciso, c'era una carenza generale di cibo e molte famiglie hanno dovuto abbandonare le loro aziende agricole. È diventato chiaro che, affinché la terra sostenga le specie di singole piante che non sono naturalmente adattate, le aziende agricole devono essere ben pianificate per tenere conto della perdita di biodiversità.

Un esempio meno radicale può essere visto nel Parco Nazionale di Yellowstone negli Stati Uniti. Le popolazioni di lupi diminuirono radicalmente dopo l'inizio della migrazione verso ovest della popolazione umana. Di conseguenza, la popolazione di animali preda come il pronghorn e il cervo mulo è aumentata. Poiché questi animali tendono a mangiare giovani alberelli Aspen, questo ha provocato un declino degli alberi di Aspen. Gli effetti a valle di questa perdita di alberi includono una maggiore erosione del suolo e la perdita di habitat per gli uccelli e altri animali. Human activity is changing biodiversity and pushing Earth toward a sixth extinction event. Earlier mass extinctions ended many species, and then new species spread into the changed environment. Today, the Holocene epoch is seeing a mass extinction linked to human actions, and it is often called the Anthropocene.

Human numbers and human biomass show how large this impact has become. In 2019, the human population reached 7.7 billion and is projected to rise to 10 billion by 2060. By biomass, humans make up about 36% of Earth’s mammals, livestock make up 60%, and wild mammals only 4%. About 70% of all birds are poultry, so only 30% are wild birds.

Several common activities threaten biodiversity. Habitat loss can happen when land is cleared for human development. Over-farming can also damage ecosystems. In addition, factories and vehicles release carbon dioxide, which adds to climate problems. To reduce these effects, people need to understand which activities cause harm and find a sustainable balance between human progress and the needs of future generations.

The Dust Bowl is one clear case of human impact on land and weather. In the 1920s and 1930s, many farmers moved to the Great Plains and clear cut the land. They removed native ground-cover plants so they could plant crops with shallow roots. Then extreme drought and poor farming practices combined to create dust storms that spread debris as far as the northeastern states. Food shortages followed, and many families had to leave their farms.

The Dust Bowl shows that farmland must be planned carefully if it is to support single crop species that are not naturally adapted to the area. A different example comes from Yellowstone National Park. After people moved west, wolf populations dropped sharply. Prey animals such as pronghorn and mule deer increased, and they ate young Aspen saplings. Aspen trees declined, which led to more erosion and less habitat for birds and other animals.

Wolves were later reintroduced to Yellowstone, and the Aspen population has since shown a rebound. If this pattern is truly caused by the return of wolves, it supports the idea that apex predators help keep ecosystems balanced. Biodiversity also matters because it helps preserve stable ecosystems, supports more predictable weather patterns, and keeps raw material available for new industrial and medical products.
