Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

Le caratteristiche che ci aiutano a distinguere un tipo di materia da un altro sono indicate come proprietà. La materia presenta due tipi di proprietà:fisiche e chimiche. Le proprietà fisiche della materia possono essere misurate e osservate senza modificare né la composizione, né l'identità della materia.

Odore, sapore, colore, aspetto, durezza, densità, punti di fusione e di ebollizione e conduttività elettrica sono tutti esempi di proprietà fisiche. Alcune di queste proprietà fisiche possono essere osservate senza modificare lo stato fisico della materia. Quindi, quando diciamo che l'elio è più leggero dell'aria, ci riferiamo ad una proprietà fisica.

Allo stesso modo, anche l'odore della benzina è una proprietà fisica. Altre proprietà fisiche possono essere osservate solo quando la materia subisce cambiamenti. Per esempio, l'oro puro allo stato solido è costituito da atomi d'oro strettamente ravvicinati.

Ma quando è fuso ad alta temperatura, cambia il suo stato da solido a liquido. Tuttavia, questo liquido è ancora composto da atomi d'oro, quindi il cambiamento é fisico. Allo stesso modo, quando l'acqua liquida si congela in ghiaccio solido, la composizione chimica sia dell'acqua che del ghiaccio rimane la medesima.

Pertanto, i cambiamenti fisici alterano solo lo stato della materia o le condizioni fisiche, senza modificarne la composizione chimica. Schiacciare, macinare, affettare, mescolare, magnetizzare o smagnetizzare sono altri metodi comuni per modificare le condizioni fisiche della materia. Le proprietà chimiche della materia, d'altra parte, sono caratteristiche che possono essere misurate e osservate solo quando la sostanza subisce un cambiamento nella composizione chimica.

Corrosività, infiammabilità, tossicità, acidità o reattività chimica sono tutti esempi di proprietà chimiche della materia. Per identificare una proprietà chimica cerchiamo un cambiamento chimico. I cambiamenti chimici comportano reazioni chimiche e sono spesso osservati attraverso un cambiamento di colore o odore.

Per esempio, quando un penny di rame viene esposto all'aria e all'acqua, si verifica un cambiamento chimico. Il rame subisce una serie di reazioni chimiche, una delle quali è mostrata qui:si forma uno strato di patina blu-verde su una moneta dal naturale color marrone. Dunque, i cambiamenti chimici producono forme di materia completamente nuove che differiscono dalla materia presente prima del cambiamento.

Per esempio, l'infiammabilità della benzina è una proprietà chimica evidente. I cambiamenti chimici nella composizione della benzina quando brucia, trasformano la benzina in sostanze completamente nuove, principalmente anidride carbonica e acqua.

Proprietà fisiche della materia

Una proprietà fisica è una caratteristica della materia che non viene associata a un cambiamento nella sua composizione chimica. Esempi familiari di proprietà fisiche includono densità, colore, durezza, punti di fusione e di ebollizione e conduttività elettrica. Possiamo osservare alcune proprietà fisiche, come la densità, il colore, senza modificare lo stato fisico della materia osservata. Altre proprietà fisiche, come la temperatura di fusione del ferro o la temperatura di congelamento dell'acqua, possono essere osservate solo quando la materia subisce un cambiamento fisico.

Un cambiamento fisico è un cambiamento nello stato o nelle proprietà della materia senza alcun cambiamento concomitante nella sua composizione chimica (le identità delle sostanze contenute nella materia). Osserviamo un cambiamento fisico quando, ad esempio, la cera si scioglie, lo zucchero si dissolve nel caffè e il vapore si condensa in acqua liquida. Altri esempi di cambiamenti fisici includono la magnetizzazione e la smagnetizzazione dei metalli (come avviene con le comuni etichette di sicurezza antifurto) e la macinazione di solidi in polveri. In ciascuno di questi esempi si verifica un cambiamento nello stato fisico, nella forma o nelle proprietà della sostanza, ma nessun cambiamento nella sua composizione chimica.

Proprietà chimiche della materia

Il cambiamento di un tipo di materia in un altro tipo (o l'incapacità di cambiare) è una proprietà chimica. Esempi di proprietà chimiche includono infiammabilità, tossicità, acidità, reattività (molti tipi) e calore di combustione. Il ferro, ad esempio, si combina con l'ossigeno in presenza di acqua per formare la ruggine; il cromo non si ossida. La nitroglicerina è molto pericolosa perché esplode facilmente; il neon non presenta quasi alcun pericolo perché è molto poco reattivo.

Per identificare una proprietà chimica, cerchiamo un cambiamento chimico. Una trasformazione chimica produce sempre uno o pi tipi di materia che differiscono dalla materia presente prima della trasformazione. La formazione della ruggine è un cambiamento chimico perché è un tipo di materia diversa rispetto al ferro, all'ossigeno e all'acqua presenti prima che si formi la ruggine. L'esplosione della nitroglicerina è un cambiamento chimico perché i gas prodotti sono di natura molto diversa dalla sostanza originaria. Altri esempi di cambiamenti chimici includono reazioni eseguite in laboratorio (come la reazione del rame con l'acido nitrico), tutte le forme di combustione (bruciore), la maturazione della frutta e il cibo cotto, digerito o in decomposizione.

Matter can be identified by its properties, which are the features that help us tell one substance from another. These properties fall into two main groups: physical properties and chemical properties. Understanding the difference helps explain how matter changes.

A physical property is a feature of matter that is not linked to a change in chemical composition. Examples include density, color, hardness, melting point, boiling point, and electrical conductivity. Some physical properties can be observed without changing the state of the matter, such as density and color. Others appear only during a physical change, like the melting temperature of iron or the freezing temperature of water.

A physical change alters the state or form of matter without changing what the substance is made of. Wax melting, sugar dissolving in coffee, and steam condensing into liquid water are all physical changes. Magnetizing and demagnetizing metals, such as in anti-theft security tags, and grinding solids into powders are also physical changes. In each case, the material looks or behaves differently, but its chemical composition stays the same.

Chemical properties describe whether matter can change into a different type of matter, or resist that change. Common chemical properties include flammability, toxicity, acidity, reactivity, and heat of combustion. Iron reacts with oxygen and water to form rust, while chromium does not oxidize. Nitroglycerin explodes easily, but neon is very unreactive.

To identify a chemical property, we look for a chemical change. A chemical change produces one or more new kinds of matter that are different from the starting material. Rust formation is a chemical change because rust is not the same as iron, oxygen, or water. Nitroglycerin exploding is also a chemical change because the gases produced are different from the original substance. Other chemical changes include copper reacting with nitric acid, burning, fruit ripening, and food being cooked, digested, or rotting.
