Energy Basics

Se un sasso viene spinto dalla collina, perde energia potenziale ma guadagna energia cinetica mentre si muove. Questo vale anche per gli atomi o le molecole che compongono un oggetto. Un oggetto a riposo ha ancora energia cinetica perché i suoi atomi componenti possono vibrare.

Questa forma di energia cinetica è chiamata energia termica. Un oggetto ha un'energia cinetica più elevata e di conseguenza un'energia termica maggiore quando gli atomi si muovono più vigorosamente. Questo oggetto è percepito come caldo.

Le molecole hanno anche un'energia potenziale chiamata energia chimica, che è associata alla posizione relativa di elettroni e nuclei. Le reazioni chimiche industriali utilizzano enormi quantit di energia per produrre materie prime (come ferro e alluminio). L'energia viene quindi utilizzata per trasformare tali materie prime in prodotti utili, come automobili, grattacieli e ponti.

Oltre il 90% del l'energia utilizzata dall’uomo proviene originariamente dal sole. Ogni giorno, il sole fornisce alla terra quasi 10.000 volte la quantit di energia necessaria per soddisfare tutto il fabbisogno energetico mondiale per quel giorno. La sfida resta quella di trovare modi per convertire e immagazzinare l'energia solare in entrata in modo che possa essere utilizzata in reazioni o processi chimici che siano convenienti e non inquinanti. Le piante e molti batteri catturano l'energia solare attraverso la fotosintesi. Gli esseri umani rilasciano l'energia immagazzinata nelle piante quando bruciano legna, carbone, petrolio o altri prodotti vegetali come l'etanolo. Anche questa energia alimentare viene usata per i loro corpi mangiando cibo che proviene direttamente dalle piante.

Termochimica

Le idee di base di un'importante area della scienza che riguarda la quantit di calore assorbito o rilasciato durante i cambiamenti chimici e fisici chiamata termochimica. I concetti sono ampiamente utilizzati in quasi tutti i campi scientifici e tecnici. Gli scienziati alimentari utilizzano la termochimica per determinare il contenuto energetico degli alimenti. I biologi studiano l'energia degli organismi viventi, come la combustione metabolica dello zucchero in anidride carbonica e acqua. Energia

L'energia pu essere definita come la capacit di fornire calore o di compiere un lavoro. Un tipo di lavoro (w) il processo con cui la materia si muove contro una forza opposta. Ad esempio, quando si gonfia il pneumatico di una bicicletta, —la materia viene spostata (l'aria nella pompa) contro la forza opposta dell'aria gi presente nel pneumatico.

Come la materia, l'energia disponibile in diversi tipi. Uno schema classifica l'energia in due tipi: energia potenziale, l'energia che un oggetto possiede a causa della sua posizione, composizione o condizione relativa, ed energia cinetica, l'energia che un oggetto possiede a causa del suo movimento.

L'acqua nella parte superiore di una cascata o di una diga ha energia potenziale a causa della sua posizione; quando scorre verso il basso attraverso i generatori possiede energia cinetica che pu essere utilizzata per compiere un lavoro e produrre elettricit in una centrale idroelettrica. Una batteria ha energia potenziale perch le sostanze chimiche al suo interno possono produrre elettricit in grado di svolgere lavoro.

Chemical reactions change matter and energy at the same time. A match lighting is a simple example. These energy changes are part of everyday life and appear in food, fuels, and industry.

Food provides energy through metabolic reactions. The macronutrients in food break down and help keep the body functioning. Fuels such as gasoline, natural gas, and coal are burned to produce energy for transportation, heating, and electricity generation.

Industrial chemical reactions also use large amounts of energy. That energy helps make raw materials like iron and aluminum. More energy is then needed to turn those materials into products such as cars, skyscrapers, and bridges.

Most energy used by humans comes from the sun. Every day, the sun sends Earth almost 10,000 times more energy than the world needs for that day. The challenge is to capture and store solar energy so it can drive chemical processes that are useful, convenient, and nonpolluting.

Plants and many bacteria capture solar energy through photosynthesis. Humans release stored energy by burning wood, coal, petroleum, or plant products such as ethanol. They also use this energy directly when they eat food that comes from plants.

Thermochemistry is the study of heat absorbed or released during chemical and physical changes. It is used to measure the energy content of foods and to study the energetics of living organisms, such as the breakdown of sugar into carbon dioxide and water. It also supports work in the oil, gas, transportation, and renewable energy industries, as well as in engineering.

Energy is the capacity to supply heat or do work. Work means causing matter to move against an opposing force, such as when air is pushed into a bicycle tire. Energy can be described as potential energy, which depends on position, composition, or condition, and kinetic energy, which depends on motion.

A waterfall or dam stores potential energy because of its position. When the water flows downward through generators, it has kinetic energy that can do work and produce electricity in a hydroelectric plant. A battery also stores potential energy because the chemicals inside it can produce electricity when needed.
