Considerate un complesso ottaedrico, esafluorocobaltato(III)Lo ione Co³⁺ha orbitali 3d⁶ parzialmente riempiti e orbitali 4s, 4p e 4d vuoti. Per formare il complesso, i sei orbitali vuoti del metallo, 4s, 4p e due 4d, sono ibridati con sei orbitali sp³d², che puntano verso gli angoli di un ottaedro. Gli orbitali ibridi accettano coppie solitarie dai sei gruppi fluoruro per formare il complesso paramagnetico.

Nell'esamminecobalto(III)i gruppi amminici fanno sì che gli elettroni 3d del cobalto si riorganizzino, creando due orbitali 3d vuoti. Questi si combinano con gli orbitali 4s e 4p per generare sei orbitali ibridi d²sp³, che poi si legano coordinatamente ai sei gruppi di ammoniaca per formare il complesso diamagnetico. Ora, considerate un complesso tetraedrico tetracloronickelato.

Ni²⁺ion ha una configurazione 3d⁸. Gli orbitali 4s e 4p vuoti si ibridano per dare quattro orbitali sp³, che puntano verso gli angoli di un tetraedro. Qui, quattro coppie di elettroni, una per ogni gruppo di cloruro, occupano gli orbitali ibridi per formare il complesso paramagnetico.

Infine, esaminate un complesso planare quadrato come il tetracloroplatinato. Lo ione Pt²⁺ha una configurazione d⁸. I gruppi cloruro costringono gli elettroni tridimensionali del metallo a riorganizzarsi, creando un orbitale vuoto.

L'orbitale vuoto si combina con gli orbitali 4s e due 4p per fornire quattro orbitali ibridi dsp² diretti verso gli angoli di un quadrato. Dopo aver accettato le coppie di elettroni dai ligandi del cloruro, si forma il complesso diamagnetico. Benché i complessi di coordinazione varino nei loro colori e comportamento magnetico, VBT non spiega i loro spettri elettronici e la variazione del loro comportamento magnetico con la temperatura.

In un complesso tetraedrico, tre orbitali p vacanti e un orbitale s vacante sul metallo si ibridano per formare quattro orbitali ibridi sp^3, che si sovrappongono agli orbitali del ligando pieni per formare il legame covalente coordinato. Allo stesso modo, vengono creati sei orbitali ibridi per i complessi ottaedrici mescolando gli orbitali atomici vacanti sullo ione metallico centrale (ibridazione d^2sp^3 o sp^3d^2). Nel caso dei complessi lineari, gli orbitali uno e uno p si sovrappongono, portando alla formazione di due orbitali ibridi sp.

Complessi orbitali interni ed esterni

La forza dei ligandi che si avvicinano influenza l'ibridazione degli orbitali atomici sullo ione metallico centrale. Considera l'esempio di un complesso ottaedrico come [Co(NH_3)_6]^3+. Lo ione Co^3+ contiene sei elettroni negli orbitali 3d e ha orbitali 4s e 4p liberi. I ligandi NH_3 in entrata, che sono ligandi di campo forte, costringono gli elettroni 3d spaiati a riorganizzarsi e ad accoppiarsi con gli altri elettroni 3d. Ciò crea due orbitali 3d vacanti, che si combinano con un orbitale 4s e tre orbitali 4p per formare sei orbitali ibridi d^2sp^3 equivalenti. In un altro complesso ottaedrico come [Co(F)_6]^3+, poiché il ligando fluoruro è un ligando di campo debole, gli elettroni 3d^6 del metallo non si riorganizzano. Per fornire orbitali vacanti per l'ibridazione, due degli orbitali 4d vuoti più esterni si combinano con quello 4s e tre orbitali 4p per formare sei orbitali ibridi vacanti. Poiché vengono utilizzati gli orbitali d più esterni, l'ibridazione viene definita ibridazione sp^3d^2 e il complesso è chiamato complesso orbitale esterno. La presenza di elettroni spaiati rende il complesso paramagnetico, e quindi questi complessi sono anche conosciuti come complessi ad alto spin.

Coordination complexes form metal-ligand bonds through valence bond theory. In this model, Linus Pauling explained bonding with hybridization and overlap of atomic orbitals. The central metal atom or ion acts as a Lewis acid. It uses empty orbitals of suitable energy to accept electron pairs from ligands, which act as Lewis bases. These coordinate covalent bonds help explain the color, geometry, and magnetic behavior seen in coordination compounds.

The type of hybridization helps determine the shape of the complex. A linear complex uses sp hybridization. A tetrahedral complex uses sp3 hybridization. A square planar complex uses dsp2 hybridization. Octahedral complexes use either d2sp3 or sp3d2 hybridization. In a tetrahedral complex, three vacant p orbitals and one vacant s orbital on the metal mix to make four sp3 hybrid orbitals. These overlap with filled ligand orbitals to form the bond. In a linear complex, one s orbital and one p orbital overlap to form two sp hybrid orbitals. Octahedral complexes form six hybrid orbitals from the vacant orbitals on the metal ion.

Ligand strength can change which orbitals the metal uses. A strong field ligand can force electrons to pair up, while a weak field ligand may not. The octahedral complex [Co(NH3)6]3+ is a good example. The Co3+ ion has six electrons in the 3d orbitals and vacant 4s and 4p orbitals. The NH3 ligands are strong field ligands, so the unpaired 3d electrons rearrange and pair. This creates two vacant 3d orbitals. These join with one 4s orbital and three 4p orbitals to make six d2sp3 hybrid orbitals. The ammonia ligands then overlap with these orbitals to form the octahedral complex.

Because the inner 3d orbitals take part in hybridization, [Co(NH3)6]3+ is an inner orbital complex. It has no unpaired electrons, so it is diamagnetic. It is also called a low spin complex. A similar octahedral complex, [Co(F)6]3+, behaves differently because fluoride is a weak field ligand. In that case, the 3d6 electrons do not rearrange. Two outer 4d orbitals combine with one 4s and three 4p orbitals to form six sp3d2 hybrid orbitals. Since outer d orbitals are used, this is an outer orbital complex. The unpaired electrons make it paramagnetic, so it is a high spin complex. High spin, or outer orbital, complexes are also more labile and less stable than low spin, inner orbital complexes.
