I complessi di metalli di transizione mostrano una varietà di colori differenti, attribuiti all'assorbimento di specifiche lunghezze d'onda della luce visibile da parte di questi composti. La luce viene assorbita quando possiede l'energia necessaria per eccitare un elettrone da un livello di energia inferiore ad uno superiore. Pertanto, generalmente i complessi di metalli di transizione assorbono la luce che corrisponde all'energia di divisione del campo cristallino, o delta, del complesso, la quale si trova, tipicamente, nell'intervallo della luce visibile.

Per esempio, l'esafluorocobaltato(III)assorbe fortemente la luce rossa ma assorbe minimamente la luce verde, facendola apparire di colore verde. L'esamminecobalto(III)che ha un delta più alto, assorbe fortemente la luce blu ad alta energia, ma assorbe minimamente la luce gialla. Di conseguenza, l'esamminecobalto(III)appare di colore giallo.

Gli effetti del delta più piccolo dell'esafluorocobaltato(III)non sono limitati al suo colore. Quando il delta è sufficientemente basso, come nell'esafluorocobaltato(III)gli elettroni occupano singolarmente gli orbitali di maggiore energia prima di appaiarsi negli orbitali di energia inferiore. Qui, il delta è più piccolo rispetto all'energia di appaiamento di spin l'energia della repulsione elettrostatica fra gli elettroni all'interno dello stesso orbitale.

In quanto tale, è più fattibile energeticamente per gli elettroni superare il delta e occupare orbitali ad alta energia, piuttosto che superare l'energia di appaiamento di spin per appaiarsi negli orbitali a bassa energia. Al contrario, in esaamminecobalto(III)il delta è maggiore dell'energia di appaiamento di spin. Dunque, gli elettroni si appaiano negli orbitali a bassa energia, lasciando vuoti gli orbitali ad alta energia, come previsto dalla regola di Hund.

Come conseguenza di questa differenza nella distribuzione elettronica, mentre nell'esafluorocobaltato(III)lo ione Co(III)possiederà quattro elettroni spaiati, nell'esaamminecobalto(III)ne avrà zero di elettroni spaiati. Di conseguenza, il primo è classificato come complesso ad alto spin, e il secondo è definito come complesso a basso spin. In generale, i ligandi di campo debole, che sono associati a piccoli valori di delta, portano a complessi ad alto spin, mentre i ligandi di campo forte, che promuovono valori elevati di delta, formano complessi a basso spin.

I complessi ad alto e basso spin, possono mostrare proprietà magnetiche molto diverse. Per esempio, l'esafluorocobaltato(III)ad alto spin è attratto da un magnete a causa dei suoi elettroni spaiati, ed è chiamato paramagnetico. Nel frattempo, l'esamminecobalto(III)a basso spin viene respinto da un magnete ed etichettato come diamagnetico.

Colore nei complessi di coordinazione

Quando gli atomi o le molecole assorbono la luce alla frequenza corretta, i loro elettroni vengono eccitati verso orbitali ad energia più elevata. Per molti atomi e molecole del gruppo principale, i fotoni assorbiti si trovano nella gamma ultravioletta dello spettro elettromagnetico, che non può essere rilevata dall'occhio umano. Per i composti di coordinazione, la differenza di energia tra gli orbitali d spesso consente di assorbire ed emettere fotoni nella gamma visibile, che viene vista come colori dall'occhio umano.

Piccoli cambiamenti nelle energie relative degli orbitali tra i quali gli elettroni stanno transitando possono portare a cambiamenti drastici nel colore della luce assorbita. Pertanto, i colori dei composti di coordinazione dipendono da molti fattori, come:

<ol>
	<li>Diversi ioni metallici acquosi possono avere colori diversi.</li>
	<li>Diversi stati di ossidazione di un metallo possono produrre colori diversi.</li>
	<li>Leganti specifici coordinati al centro metallico influenzano il colore dei complessi di coordinazione. Ad esempio, il complesso del ferro(II) [Fe(H_2O)_6]SO_4 appare blu-verde perché il complesso ad alto spin assorbe i fotoni nelle lunghezze d'onda rosse. Al contrario, il complesso di ferro(II) a basso spin K_4[Fe(CN)_6] appare di colore giallo pallido perché assorbe fotoni viola ad alta energia.</li>
</ol>

In generale, i ligandi a campo forte causano una grande divisione nelle energie degli orbitali d dell'atomo di metallo centrale (grande Δ). I composti di coordinazione dei metalli di transizione con questi ligandi sono gialli, arancioni o rossi perché assorbono la luce viola o blu ad alta energia.

D'altra parte, i composti di coordinazione dei metalli di transizione con ligandi a campo debole sono spesso blu-verdi, blu o indaco perché assorbono la luce gialla, arancione o rossa a bassa energia. La forza dei ligandi per dividere gli orbitali d è elencata nella serie spettrochimica. Qui i ligandi sono scritti nel valore crescente dell'energia di scissione del campo cristallino (Δ).

Ad esempio, un composto di coordinazione dello ione Cu^+ ha una configurazione d^10 e tutti gli orbitali e_g sono pieni. Per eccitare un elettrone ad un livello più alto, come l'orbitale 4p, sono necessari fotoni di energia molto elevata. Questa energia corrisponde a lunghezze d'onda molto corte nella regione ultravioletta dello spettro. Nessuna luce visibile viene assorbita, quindi l'occhio non vede alcun cambiamento e il composto appare bianco o incolore. Una soluzione contenente [Cu(CN)_2]^−, ad esempio, è incolore. D'altra parte, i complessi ottaedrici Cu2^+ hanno ad esempio un posto vacante negli orbitali e gli elettroni possono essere eccitati a questo livello. La lunghezza d'onda (energia) della luce assorbita corrisponde alla parte visibile dello spettro e i complessi Cu2^+ sono quasi sempre colorati- blu, blu-verde viola o giallo.

Magnetismo nei complessi di coordinazione

L'evidenza sperimentale delle misurazioni magnetiche supporta la teoria dei complessi ad alto e basso spin. Le molecole come l'O_2 che contengono elettroni spaiati sono paramagnetiche. Le sostanze paramagnetiche sono attratte dai campi magnetici. Molti complessi di metalli di transizione hanno elettroni spaiati e quindi sono paramagnetici. Molecole come N_2 e ioni come Na^+ e [Fe(CN)_6]^4− che non contengono elettroni spaiati sono diamagnetici. Le sostanze diamagnetiche hanno una leggera tendenza ad essere respinte dai campi magnetici.

Quando un elettrone in un atomo o ione non è accoppiato, il momento magnetico dovuto alla sua rotazione rende l'intero atomo o ione paramagnetico. La dimensione del momento magnetico di un sistema contenente elettroni spaiati è direttamente correlata al numero di tali elettroni: maggiore è il numero di elettroni spaiati, maggiore è il momento magnetico. Pertanto, il momento magnetico osservato viene utilizzato per determinare il numero di elettroni spaiati presenti. Il momento magnetico misurato di d^6 [Fe(CN)_6]^4− a basso spin conferma che il ferro è diamagnetico, mentre d^6 [Fe(H_2O)_6]^2+ ad alto spin ha quattro elettroni spaiati con un momento magnetico che conferma questa disposizione (Figura 2).

Color in coordination complexes comes from how metal electrons absorb light. When atoms or molecules absorb light at the right frequency, electrons move to higher-energy orbitals. For many main-group atoms and molecules, the absorbed light is ultraviolet and cannot be seen. In coordination compounds, the energy gap between d orbitals often matches visible light, so the compound can absorb and emit colors that the human eye detects.

Small changes in orbital energy can cause large shifts in the color that is absorbed. That is why coordination compounds can change color depending on the metal ion in water, the oxidation state of the metal, and the ligands attached to the metal center. Ligands are molecules or ions that bind to the metal. The iron(II) complex [Fe(H2O)6]SO4 is blue-green because the high-spin complex absorbs red light. The low-spin iron(II) complex K4[Fe(CN)6] is pale yellow because it absorbs higher-energy violet light.

Ligand strength also affects color through crystal field splitting, the size of the energy gap between d orbitals. Strong-field ligands create a large split, and these transition metal complexes often look yellow, orange, or red because they absorb violet or blue light. Weak-field ligands create a smaller split, and these complexes often look blue-green, blue, or indigo because they absorb yellow, orange, or red light. The spectrochemical series lists ligands in order of increasing crystal field splitting energy.

Some coordination compounds do not absorb visible light at all. A Cu+ complex has a d10 electron configuration, and the eg orbitals are filled. To move an electron to a higher level such as a 4p orbital, the compound would need very high-energy ultraviolet light. Since no visible light is absorbed, the compound appears white or colorless. A solution of [Cu(CN)2]- is one example. In contrast, octahedral Cu2+ complexes have a vacancy in the eg orbitals, so electrons can be excited there. These complexes are usually colored, often blue, blue-green, violet, or yellow.

Magnetism gives another way to study coordination complexes. Molecules such as O2 with unpaired electrons are paramagnetic, which means they are attracted to magnetic fields. Many transition metal complexes are also paramagnetic because they contain unpaired electrons. Molecules such as N2 and ions such as Na+ and [Fe(CN)6]4- have no unpaired electrons, so they are diamagnetic and show a slight repulsion by magnetic fields.

Magnetic measurements can support the idea of high-spin and low-spin complexes. This comparison is useful for d4, d5, d6, and d7 octahedral systems, but not for d1, d2, d3, d5, d8, d9, and d10 systems. When an electron is unpaired, its spin creates a magnetic moment, and the size of that moment depends on how many unpaired electrons are present. The measured magnetic moment can therefore help determine electron pairing. For example, low-spin d6 [Fe(CN)6]4- is diamagnetic, while high-spin d6 [Fe(H2O)6]2+ has four unpaired electrons and a magnetic moment that matches that arrangement.
