Mass spectrometry is an analytical technique used to determine the molecular weight of a molecule.
A high-energy electron beam that strikes the molecule can displace an electron. Apart from electron impact ionization, alternative methods for sample ionization include chemical ionization and electrospray ionization.
Ionization leads to the formation of a parent molecular ion. It is a radical cation species with one unpaired electron and a 1+ positive charge.
Since the mass of the electron is negligible, the molecular weights of the molecular ion and its parent molecule are comparable. Here, the loss of an electron from the molecule weakens some bonds in the molecule.
Eventually, the molecular ion fragments into cations, radicals, neutral molecules, and other low-molecular-weight radical cations. The cleavage occurs at the weak bonds to produce relatively stable fragments.
In mass spectrometry, the individual fragments are separated and weighed. This information is used to reconstruct the molecular weight, structure, and molecular formula of the native molecule.

Mass spectrometry helps identify a compound by measuring its molecular mass and molecular formula. It does this by turning the analyte molecule into ions and then comparing ion abundance with mass-to-charge ratio.

One common ionization method is electron ionization, or EI. In EI, high-energy electron beams strike analyte molecules in the gas phase. The beam removes an electron and leaves a molecular ion behind. A molecular ion is a radical cation, so it has a positive charge and an unpaired electron.

The molecular ion has almost the same mass as the original analyte molecule because the electron mass is negligible. Since the ion usually carries a single charge, its measured mass-to-charge ratio matches the molecular mass of the analyte molecule. The charge also makes the molecular ion unstable.

That instability can cause fragmentation at weakened bonds. The molecular ion breaks into cations, radicals, neutral molecules, and other radical cations with smaller mass. The instrument measures the mass-to-charge ratio of the charged fragments as well. Together, the molecular ion and its fragments can reveal molecular mass, chemical structure, and molecular formula.
