Ricordiamo che l'1,3-butadiene è un sistema coniugato a quattro atomi di carbonio. In confronto, il catione allile e l'anione sono sistemi coniugati a tre atomi di carbonio.
Una combinazione lineare dei tre orbitali p atomici non ibridati in sistemi allilici dà tre orbitali molecolari π.
L'orbitale molecolare a più bassa energia, ψ1, è formato da una sovrapposizione in fase di tutti gli orbitali p ed è interamente legante.

The allyl cation and allyl anion both have the same three-carbon orbital pattern. An allyl group is a conjugated system, which means its electrons are spread across connected p orbitals. In the allyl anion, propene is treated with a strong base that removes a methyl hydrogen. In the allyl cation, the species forms as an intermediate in substitution reactions that involve allylic halides.

In both cases, the allylic carbon changes from sp3 to sp2 hybridization. That change leaves three sp2-hybridized carbons in a row, each with one unhybridized p orbital. These three atomic p orbitals combine to form three molecular orbitals: phi 1, phi 2, and phi 3.

Phi 1 is the bonding molecular orbital. Phi 2 is nonbonding and has a node through the central carbon. Phi 3 is antibonding and has two nodes. The allyl cation and allyl anion share this same molecular orbital framework. They differ only in the number of pi electrons. The allyl cation has two pi electrons in phi 1. The allyl anion has four pi electrons, which fill phi 1 and phi 2.
