Ricordiamo che l'addizione elettrofila di un alogenuro di idrogeno come HBr a un alchene segue la regola di Markovnikov, formando un bromuro alchilico.
In confronto, un diene coniugato come l'1,3-butadiene ha due doppi legami, entrambi ugualmente adatti a reagire con HBr, risultando in due prodotti.
I prodotti sono spesso chiamati addotti 1,2- e 1,4, dove i numeri indicano la modalità di aggiunta del reagente elettrofilo.
La prima fase del meccanismo prevede l'aggiunta del protone a uno dei carboni terminali dando un intermedio carbocatione allilico, che è stabilizzato per risonanza. Quindi, sarà favorito rispetto al carbocatione primario relativamente instabile.
Nella seconda fase, lo ione bromuro può attaccare l'intermedio allilico in entrambi i carboni portatori di carica positiva.

Hydrogen halide addition to 1,3-butadiene gives two possible products instead of one. With conjugated systems like this diene, adding one equivalent of HBr leads to a mixture of the 1,2-addition and 1,4-addition products. This is different from the single product usually seen with alkenes and nonconjugated dienes that follow Markovnikov’s rule.

The reaction starts when H+ adds across one of the double bonds in 1,3-butadiene. That step forms a resonance-stabilized allyl cation, which is an ion whose positive charge is spread over more than one carbon. Br− can then attack either carbon that carries positive character, which gives either the 1,2-adduct or the 1,4-adduct.

The product ratio depends on temperature. Low temperature favors the 1,2-adduct. Higher temperature favors the 1,4-adduct.
