Mentre le reazioni elettrocicliche termiche avvengono attraverso lo stato fondamentale HOMO, gli analoghi fotochimici procedono attraverso lo stato eccitato HOMO.
La stereochimica dei prodotti formati sotto attivazione fotochimica dipende dal numero di coppie di π elettroni e dalla modalità di chiusura dell'anello.
Consideriamo un sistema con un numero dispari di coppie di π elettroni come un triene coniugato.
L'eccitazione fotochimica promuove un elettrone dallo stato fondamentale HOMO al LUMO del triene, trasformando il LUMO in uno stato eccitato HOMO.

Photochemical electrocyclic reactions form rings when conjugated systems absorb UV-visible light. The light promotes an electron from the ground state to the excited state. Because of that change, the reaction follows the excited-state HOMO instead of the ground-state HOMO.

The HOMO, or highest occupied molecular orbital, has different symmetry in the excited state than it does in the ground state. That difference changes the stereochemical outcome of electrocyclic reactions. As a result, the product depends on whether the reaction is activated thermally or photochemically.

Photochemical activation follows clear selection rules. Conjugated systems with an even number of pi-electron pairs undergo disrotatory ring closure, where the ends of the chain rotate in opposite directions. For example, photochemical activation of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, which has two pi-electron pairs, gives cis-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.

Conjugated systems with an odd number of pi-electron pairs undergo conrotatory ring closure, where the ends rotate in the same direction. For example, (2E,4Z,6E)-2,4,6-octatriene has three pi-electron pairs. Under photochemical conditions, it forms trans-5,6-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexadiene.
