La reazione di Diels-Alder è una reazione reversibile in cui la temperatura di reazione influenza fortemente la posizione di equilibrio.
Le temperature moderate favoriscono il prodotto di aggiunta, mentre le alte temperature favoriscono i reagenti attraverso la reazione inversa nota come retro Diels-Alder.
Ma perché?
Ricordiamo che la variazione dell'energia libera di Gibbs, ∆G, è una somma della variazione di entalpia, ∆H, e della variazione di entropia a una data temperatura, -T∆S.
Affinché una reazione sia spontanea, ∆G deve essere negativa. Per prevedere ∆G, vengono utilizzati i valori di ∆H e ∆S.
In una reazione di Diels-Alder, si rompono tre legami π, si formano due legami σ e uno π legame. Ricordiamo che le obbligazioni σ sono più forti delle obbligazioni π. Quindi, la reazione è esotermica e ∆H è negativa.
Inoltre, una diminuzione delle moli sul lato del prodotto indica una riduzione dell'entropia. Quindi, ∆S è negativo, e -T∆S diventa positivo.
A basse temperature, il termine ∆H domina, il che implica che ∆G è negativo, favorendo la reazione in avanti.
Al contrario, il termine "T∆S domina alle alte temperature, risultando in un ∆G positivo, favorendo la reazione inversa.

ΔG è un composto di due termini, ΔH e −TΔS. In una reazione di Diels-Alder, si formano due legami σ più forti a scapito di due legami π più deboli, risultando in un ΔH negativo. Le reazioni di cicloaddizione procedono con una diminuzione dell'entropia. Di conseguenza, ΔS è negativo e il termine −TΔS è positivo. The Diels–Alder reaction is thermally reversible. At suitable temperatures, it can return to the starting diene and dienophile. The forward reaction forms a cyclohexene derivative and is favored at low to medium temperatures.

The reverse process is called the retro-Diels–Alder reaction. It is a ring-opening reaction that is favored at high temperatures. This temperature shift helps determine which direction is more likely to occur.

Thermodynamics explains this behavior through Gibbs free energy, or ΔG. If ΔG is negative, the reaction occurs spontaneously. If ΔG is positive, the reaction occurs spontaneously in the opposite direction.

ΔG depends on two terms: ΔH and −TΔS. In the Diels–Alder reaction, two stronger σ bonds form at the expense of two weaker π bonds, so ΔH is negative. Cycloaddition reactions also show a decrease in entropy, so ΔS is negative and the term −TΔS is positive. At low temperatures, the total is negative and the forward reaction is spontaneous. At high temperatures, the total becomes positive and the reverse reaction is spontaneous.
