I composti aromatici sono idrocarburi con legami π coniugati racchiusi in un anello. Il benzene e i suoi derivati sono gli esempi più noti di composti aromatici.
In origine, i derivati del benzene erano isolati dagli oli naturali prodotti da piante e alberi ed erano chiamati "aromatici" per il loro odore caratteristico.
Ad esempio, la benzaldeide delle mandorle e delle ciliegie, il toluene del balsamo di Tolu e l'eugenolo dei chiodi di garofano hanno odori distinti.
Nel corso del tempo, il termine aromatico ha continuato a descrivere tutti i derivati del benzene, indipendentemente dal fatto che siano profumati o meno. Ad esempio, l'antidolorifico aspirina contiene acido acetilsalicilico, un composto aromatico inodore.
Strutturalmente, i composti aromatici sono idrocarburi altamente insaturi e mostrano un comportamento chimico diverso da alcheni, alchini e polieni a catena aperta.
Le fonti primarie di composti aromatici semplici sono il catrame di carbone e il petrolio.
La distillazione frazionata del catrame di carbone produce molti composti aromatici come benzene, toluene, xilene, naftalene e altri.
Allo stesso modo, durante la raffinazione del petrolio, gli alcani vengono convertiti in composti aromatici.

Aromatic Compounds: Overview

In generale, il termine “aromatico” indica un odore o una fragranza gradevole di fiori freschi, caffè appena preparato, ecc… Agli albori della storia della chimica organica, molti derivati del benzene venivano isolati dagli oli con odore gradevole delle piante. Ad esempio, la vanillina è stata isolata dall'olio di vaniglia, il metil salicilato dall'olio di wintergreen e la cinnamaldeide dall'olio di cannella. Avevano tutti un odore gradevole; da qui venne dato il nome aromatico.

Nel 1825, Faraday isolò il benzene dal gas illuminante compresso (il combustibile bruciato nelle lampade a gas) e lo chiamò “bicarbureto di idrogeno”. Eseguì anche un'analisi elementare del composto e osservò un rapporto 1:1 tra idrogeno e carbonio.

Successivamente, nel 1834, Eilhardt Mitscherlich sintetizzò il benzene dall'acido benzoico (isolato dalla gomma benzoino) e dall'ossido di calcio. Eseguendo misurazioni della densità del vapore, mostrò che la formula molecolare del benzene è C_6H_6. Poiché il nuovo composto era derivato dalla gomma benzoino, lo chiamò Benzin, ora noto come benzene. È usato come solvente da laboratorio.

Il termine “aromatico” è ancora usato per descrivere tutti i derivati del benzene, profumati o meno. Molti dei composti naturali e farmaceutici sono aromatici. Ad esempio, l'estrone, uno steroide, l'atorvastatina (Lipitor), un farmaco che abbassa il colesterolo, lo Zoloft, un antidepressivo e il Serevent, usato per trattare l'asma, sono composti aromatici.

I composti aromatici si ottengono principalmente dal carbone e dal petrolio. Il carbone produce catrame di carbone quando viene riscaldato a 1000 °C in assenza di aria. Il catrame di carbone, dopo distillazione frazionata, produce molti idrocarburi aromatici come benzene, toluene, dimetil benzene (xilene), naftalene, bifenile, indene, antracene, ecc.

Tuttavia, i composti aromatici non possono essere ottenuti direttamente dal petrolio. Durante la raffinazione del petrolio, gli alcani vengono convertiti in composti aromatici in presenza di un catalizzatore a 500°C e ad alta pressione.

Aromatic compounds are linked to both pleasant smells and important chemical structures. The word aromatic first came from fragrant natural sources such as fresh flowers and spices. Early organic chemists isolated benzene derivatives from oils of plants, including vanillin from vanilla, methyl salicylate from wintergreen, and cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon.

The history of benzene also helped shape the idea of aromatic compounds. In 1825, Faraday isolated benzene from compressed illuminating gas, which was used in gaslights. He called it bicarburet of hydrogen and found a 1:1 ratio of hydrogen to carbon. In 1834, Eilhardt Mitscherlich made benzene from benzoic acid, which comes from gum benzoin, and calcium oxide. He used vapor density measurements to show that benzene has the formula C6H6, and he named it Benzin, now called benzene.

Today, the term aromatic includes many benzene derivatives, even when they do not smell pleasant. Benzene itself is used as a laboratory solvent. Many natural and pharmaceutical compounds are aromatic, including estrone, atorvastatin (Lipitor), Zoloft, and Serevent.

Aromatic compounds are mainly obtained from coal and petroleum. When coal is heated to 1000 °C without air, it forms coal tar. Fractional distillation of coal tar gives aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, biphenyl, indene, and anthracene. Aromatic compounds are not taken directly from petroleum, but petroleum refining can convert alkanes into aromatic compounds with a catalyst at 500 °C under high pressure.
