I composti aromatici ciclici che hanno uno o più eteroatomi sono chiamati composti aromatici eterociclici.
I composti aromatici eterociclici a cinque membri includono pirrolo, furano, tiofene e imidazolo, azoto, ossigeno e zolfo come eteroatomi.
In questi composti planari, tutti gli atomi sono ibridizzati sp2, incluso l'eteroatomo.
Come evidente dalla struttura di legame π del pirrolo, un elettrone π da ciascun carbonio e una coppia solitaria di elettroni dall'eteroatomo occupano gli orbitali 2p non ibridati.
Questi cinque orbitali si sovrappongono, formando un circuito chiuso di 6 elettroni π, rendendo il pirrolo aromatico.
Nel furano e nel tiofene, le coppie solitarie aggiuntive di elettroni occupano un orbitale ibrido sp2 e non fanno parte del sistema π.
L'imidazolo ha due atomi di azoto. La coppia solitaria su uno degli azoti fa parte del sestetto aromatico. La coppia solitaria sul secondo azoto occupa un orbitale ibrido sp2 e non è coinvolta nel sistema π.

I composti aromatici eterociclici sono composti ciclici aromatici che hanno uno o più eteroatomi, atomi diversi dal carbonio, nell'anello. A seconda del numero di atomi presenti nell'anello, possono essere a cinque o sei membri. Esempi di composti aromatici eterociclici a cinque membri includono pirrolo, furano, tiofene e imidazolo. Il pirrolo è costituito da un atomo di azoto con una coppia solitaria di elettroni. Il furano e il tiofene hanno rispettivamente un eteroatomo di ossigeno e uno di zolfo. Entrambi possiedono due coppie solitarie di elettroni. L'imidazolo differisce dagli altri tre in quanto ha due atomi di azoto come eteroatomi con una coppia solitaria di elettroni su ciascuno di essi. In tutti e quattro i composti eterociclici, tutti gli atomi sono ibridati sp^2, compresi gli eteroatomi.

Di conseguenza, tutti gli atomi hanno un orbitale p non ibridato, perpendicolare al piano dell'anello. In ogni caso, tutti gli atomi di carbonio contribuiscono con un elettrone π e gli eteroatomi contribuiscono con una coppia solitaria di elettroni, occupando l'orbitale p non ibridato. Questo completa il sestetto aromatico e forma un anello chiuso di 6 elettroni π.

La coppia solitaria aggiuntiva di elettroni dell'ossigeno e dell'eteroatomo di zolfo nel furano e nel tiofene, rispettivamente, occupa l'orbitale ibrido sp^2, che giace perpendicolare all'orbitale p, e non partecipa al sistema π. Nel caso dell'imidazolo, la coppia solitaria di elettroni sul secondo atomo di azoto occupa l'orbitale ibrido sp^2 e non partecipa al sistema aromatico π. Five-membered aromatic rings with heteroatoms are cyclic compounds that contain one or more atoms other than carbon in the ring. They are aromatic and can have either five or six atoms in the ring. Common examples include pyrrole, furan, thiophene, and imidazole.

These rings differ by the heteroatom present. Pyrrole has one nitrogen atom with one lone pair of electrons. Furan has one oxygen atom, and thiophene has one sulfur atom. Both furan and thiophene have two lone pairs of electrons. Imidazole has two nitrogen atoms, and each nitrogen has one lone pair of electrons.

In these compounds, the ring atoms are sp2 hybridized, including the heteroatoms. That means each atom has one unhybridized p orbital standing perpendicular to the ring plane. The carbon atoms each contribute one pi electron. The heteroatoms contribute one lone pair from the p orbital, which helps complete the aromatic sextet and forms a closed loop of 6 pi electrons.

Not every lone pair takes part in aromaticity. In furan and thiophene, the extra lone pair on oxygen or sulfur stays in an sp2 hybrid orbital and does not join the pi system. In imidazole, the lone pair on the second nitrogen also stays in an sp2 hybrid orbital. As a result, only one nitrogen lone pair is part of the aromatic sextet.
