Average Velocity

La velocità media indica la velocità con cui un oggetto si muove nel tempo ed è definita come lo spostamento totale tra due punti diviso per il tempo impiegato per viaggiare tra di loro.

Per calcolare altre grandezze fisiche della cinematica, dobbiamo introdurre la variabile di tempo. La variabile di tempo ci permette non solo di determinare la posizione di un oggetto durante il movimento, ma anche di capire quanto velocemente si muove. La velocità con cui un oggetto si muove è data dalla velocità con cui la sua posizione cambia nel tempo. Per ogni posizione xi viene assegnato un particolare tempo ti. Se i dettagli del movimento ad ogni istante non sono importanti, il tasso è solitamente espresso come la velocità media. Questa grandezza vettoriale è semplicemente lo spostamento totale tra due punti, Δx, diviso per il tempo necessario per viaggiare tra i due, Δt. La velocità media è un vettore e può essere sia positiva che negativa, a seconda della posizione iniziale o finale. L'espressione per la velocità media è data da:

L'accelerazione media, invece, è la distanza totale percorsa divisa per il tempo trascorso, e non è necessariamente la stessa della grandezza della velocità media. Per esempio, se un viaggio inizia e finisce nella stessa posizione, lo spostamento totale è zero, e quindi la velocità media è zero. Tuttavia, l'accelerazione media, non è zero, perché la distanza totale percorsa è maggiore di zero. Se facciamo un viaggio su strada di 300 km e dobbiamo arrivare a destinazione in un certo momento, allora saremmo interessati alla nostra accelerazione media. Average velocity and average speed help describe motion in kinematics. To compare motion over time, we use the time variable. Time lets us track an object’s position and how fast that position changes.

For motion between two points, each position x_i is paired with a time t_i. When the details of motion at each instant are not important, we use average velocity. Average velocity is a vector quantity, so it includes direction. It is found by dividing total displacement, Δx, by the time interval, Δt.

Because it is a vector, average velocity can be positive or negative. The sign depends on the object’s initial and final positions. Average speed is different. It is the total distance traveled divided by the elapsed time, so it is not necessarily the same as the magnitude of average velocity.

A round trip shows the difference clearly. If an object starts and ends at the same place, its total displacement is zero, so its average velocity is zero. Its average speed is not zero, because the total distance traveled is still greater than zero. On a road trip of 300 km, average speed is the quantity that matters if you need to reach a destination by a certain time. A car’s odometer measures total distance traveled, so dividing that distance by total time gives the car’s average speed.

The Shanghai Maglev train gives another example. It travels from Longyang Road to Pudong International Airport over a distance of 30 km. The trip takes about 8 minutes on average. Using the distance and time, the train’s average velocity is 225 km/hr.
