Kinematic Equations - II

La prima equazione cinematica esprime la velocità in funzione della velocità iniziale e della variazione di velocità.
Per derivare la seconda equazione cinematica, vengono utilizzate due equazioni per la velocità x media durante un intervallo da t uguale a zero a un tempo successivo t. La prima equazione per la velocità x media è la variazione dello spostamento nel tempo, come discusso nelle lezioni precedenti. Qui, la posizione iniziale è indicata da x0 al tempo t uguale a zero e x al tempo successivo t.
Supponendo che l'accelerazione sia costante, la velocità x media può anche essere rappresentata come la media delle velocità al momento iniziale e finale. Sostituendo qui la prima equazione cinematica, si ottiene un'equazione per la posizione x in funzione del tempo.

Supponiamo che una macchina si unisca al traffico autostradale grazie ad una rampa lunga 200 m. Se la sua velocità iniziale è di 10 m/s e accelera di 2 m/s2, allora il tempo necessario alla macchina per percorrere la rampa di 200 m può essere calcolato usando la seconda equazione cinematica. Qui, le grandezze conosciute sono la distanza di 200 m, la velocità iniziale della macchina di 10 m/s, e l'accelerazione di 2 m/s2. Usando la seconda equazione cinematica:

Usando la formula quadratica per risolvere il tempo abbiamo due soluzioni: t = 10 s e, t = -20 s. Un valore negativo per il tempo è irragionevole, poiché significherebbe che l'evento è avvenuto 20 s prima dell'inizio del movimento, quindi possiamo scartare questa soluzione.

The second kinematic equation relates an object’s final position to its initial position, its starting velocity, and the extra distance gained as velocity changes. It is used only when acceleration stays constant during the motion. That makes it useful for straight-line motion problems with a steady rate of acceleration.

A car merging onto a 200 m freeway ramp is a good example. In the example, the car starts at 10 m/s and accelerates at 2 m/s². The known values are the distance, the initial velocity, and the acceleration, so the second kinematic equation can be used to find the time.

Substituting the values into the equation leads to a quadratic equation for time. Solving it gives two answers: t = 10 s and t = −20 s. The negative time is not reasonable, because it would mean the motion happened 20 s before it started, so that solution is discarded. The time for the car to travel the 200 m ramp is 10 s.
