Power

La potenza misura la velocità con cui viene svolto il lavoro. L'unità di misura SI della potenza è watt, ed è definita come un joule di lavoro svolto in un secondo.
Ricordiamo che il lavoro è il trasferimento di energia, quindi la potenza può essere rappresentata come il tasso di trasferimento di energia. Ad esempio, una lampadina da 100 watt brilla più di una lampadina da 50 watt perché l'energia emessa al secondo dalla lampadina da 100 watt è il doppio di quella della lampadina da 50 watt.
Allo stesso modo, due sollevatori di pesi faranno la stessa quantità di lavoro mentre sollevano un peso a un'altezza specifica, ma quello che lo fa in un tempo più breve avrà più potenza.
Quando il lavoro svolto varia in funzione del tempo, la potenza ottenuta dividendo il lavoro totale svolto per il tempo totale impiegato è chiamata potenza media.
Se gli intervalli di tempo vengono ridotti per trovare la potenza erogata in un determinato punto, si parla di potenza istantanea. È uguale alla potenza media quando la potenza è costante in un intervallo di tempo.

Il concetto di lavoro implica la forza e lo spostamento; nel frattempo, il teorema dell'energia cinetica collega il lavoro netto svolto su un corpo alla differenza nella sua energia cinetica, calcolato tra due punti nella sua traiettoria. Mentre nessuna di queste grandezze o relazioni implica esplicitamente il tempo, sappiamo che il tempo disponibile per completare un lavoro è spesso importante tanto quanto la quantità di lavoro. Per esempio, i velocisti in una corsa potrebbero avere la stessa velocità alla fine, di conseguenza, hanno svolto la stessa quantità di lavoro, ma il vincitore della gara lo ha fatto nel minor tempo possibile.

Possiamo esprimere la relazione tra il lavoro svolto e il tempo impiegato attraverso l'introduzione del concetto di potenza. Visto che il lavoro varia in funzione del tempo, definiamo la potenza media come il lavoro svolto durante un intervallo di tempo. Power connects work with the time needed to do it. Work depends on force and displacement. The work-energy theorem also links net work on an object to the change in its kinetic energy between two points on its path. These ideas do not include time directly, but time still matters in many real situations.

A sprinter is a clear example. Two runners may reach the same finish speed, so they do the same amount of work. The winner is the one who reaches that speed in less time. Power describes this difference by comparing work done with the time used.

Average power is the work done during a time interval divided by that interval. Because work and energy are measured in joules, power is measured in joules per second. The SI unit for this is the watt, where 1 J/s equals 1 W. Another common unit is horsepower, and 1 hp equals 746 W.

Work-Energy Along Curved Paths

The work-energy theorem can be applied to motion along a curved path. A curved path can be treated as many tiny straight paths added together. On each small part, the force can be taken as constant, so the work-energy theorem can be used there. The total result comes from adding the work done along all of those small path segments.
