Conservation of Energy

La legge di conservazione dell'energia afferma che l'energia totale di un sistema isolato è sempre conservata. Significa che l'energia può essere convertita solo da una forma all'altra.
Ad esempio, l'energia potenziale immagazzinata dell'acqua in cima a una scogliera viene convertita in energia cinetica quando cade.
Allo stesso modo, quando un ceppo di legno viene bruciato, l'energia potenziale immagazzinata nel legno viene convertita in energia cinetica sotto forma di luce e calore.
Matematicamente, la legge di conservazione dell'energia è rappresentata come la somma della variazione dell'energia cinetica, dell'energia potenziale e dell'energia interna uguale a zero. In altre parole, se una forma di energia diminuisce, viene compensata da un aumento di altre forme di energia.

I termini “quantità conservata” e “legge di conservazione” in fisica hanno uno specifico significato, che differisce dal significato dato nel loro uso quotidiano. Per esempio, nella vita di tutti i giorni, l'acqua può essere conservata non usandola, o usandola meno, o riusandola. Tuttavia, nella scienza, una quantità conservata di un sistema rimane costante, cambia da una quantità definita che è trasferita ad un altro sistema, ed è convertita in altri tipi di quantità. In senso scientifico, una quantità conservata può essere trasformata ma non completamente creata o distrutta. Pertanto, non c'è una legge fisica di conservazione dell'acqua.

Nella conservazione dell'energia, l'energia meccanica di una particella rimane costante finché le forze al di fuori del sistema o non conservative lavorano su essa. In questo caso, il cambiamento nell'energia meccanica è uguale al lavoro svolto dalle forze non conservative. Quest'affermazione è espressa dal concetto di conservazione dell'energia per una particella classica finché c'è solo lavoro conservativo. Ricordiamo che una particella classica è solo una massa puntiforme non relativistica e obbedisce alle leggi del movimento di Newton.

Energy changes in a closed system follow a conservation law in physics. A conserved quantity is not the same as the everyday use of the word &quot;conserved.&quot; In science, a conserved quantity stays constant, or it changes by a definite amount that is transferred to another system and converted into another form of the same quantity.

This means a conserved quantity can change form, but it cannot be created or destroyed in a strict physical sense. For that reason, physics does not have a law of conservation of water, even though people may say water is conserved in daily life. In the scientific sense, the system keeps track of the quantity as it moves or changes form.

For a classical particle, mechanical energy stays constant unless something outside the system does work or non-conservative forces act on it. A classical particle is a point mass that is non-relativistic and obeys Newton's laws of motion. When non-conservative forces do work, the change in mechanical energy equals that work. If only conservative work is present, the energy-conservation statement holds for the particle.
