Quando un tronco di legno che galleggia sulla superficie dell'acqua viene spinto verso il basso e gli viene permesso di ondeggiare su e giù, oscilla intorno alla sua posizione media con un'ampiezza costante simile al semplice movimento armonico.
Nel tempo, una forza dissipativa nota come forza di smorzamento esercitata dall'acqua riduce l'ampiezza dell'oscillazione con una certa perdita di energia, corrispondente al suo movimento, e si traduce in oscillazioni armoniche smorzate.
La forza di smorzamento è proporzionale alla velocità del tronco di legno, che è la misura del decadimento dell'oscillazione diretta in senso opposto al movimento.
La forza netta è uguale alle forze di ripristino e smorzamento, che agiscono in direzioni opposte.
Riorganizzando e riscrivendo l'equazione della velocità e dell'accelerazione in termini di derivate di posizione rispetto al tempo si arriva a un'equazione quadratica differenziale, che descrive il moto armonico smorzato del tronco di legno.

Nel mondo reale, le oscillazioni seguono raramente il vero moto armonico semplice. Un sistema che continua il suo movimento indefinitamente senza perdere la sua ampiezza è chiamato non smorzato. Oscillations in the real world often lose energy as they move. A system that keeps the same amplitude without any loss is called undamped. That kind of motion is rare, because friction and other non-conservative forces usually reduce the motion over time.

Common examples show this clearly. A guitar string stops vibrating a few seconds after it is plucked. A swing also needs a person to keep pushing it if the motion is to continue. In some devices, such as car shock absorbers, damping is useful because it helps control the motion.

When damping is small, the motion still looks much like simple harmonic motion. The period and frequency stay nearly the same, but the amplitude gets smaller and smaller. The damping force removes energy from the system, and that energy usually becomes thermal energy. Because mechanical energy is taken away, the work done by the non-conservative force, W nc, is negative.
