Perception of Sound Waves

Le onde sonore possono essere differenziate in base al loro volume, tono e timbro.
Il volume è associato all'ampiezza dell'onda sonora e si riferisce alla quantità di spostamento massimo delle particelle vibranti del mezzo dalla loro posizione media. Un'ampiezza maggiore implica un suono più forte.
D'altra parte, la frequenza delle vibrazioni che viaggiano attraverso il mezzo definisce l'altezza di un'onda sonora. Maggiore è la frequenza delle vibrazioni, maggiore è l'intonazione.

The human ear does not respond the same way to every sound frequency. Sounds with the same pressure can seem louder or softer when their frequencies change. Ear health also affects this perception, and hearing can decline with age. Regular exposure to loud noises may also damage the ears over time.

Pitch depends on both frequency and pressure amplitude, which is the size of the sound wave’s pressure change. Two sounds with the same frequency and pressure amplitude have the same pitch. If the pressure amplitudes differ, the louder source may seem lower in pitch. That effect helps explain why sound is not judged by frequency alone.

A real sound wave is usually a complex mix of many frequencies. When these frequencies are whole-number multiples of a fundamental frequency, they are called harmonics. If two sources have the same fundamental frequency and amplitude, they can still sound different because of the number of harmonics present. The start and end of a sound also help shape its quality, or timbre.
