Nomenclature of Aromatic Compounds with Multiple Substituents

La nomenclatura IUPAC dei composti aromatici con più sostituenti dipende dal numero e dalla posizione dei sostituenti.
Per denominare i derivati benzenici disostituiti, le posizioni del sostituente sono indicate utilizzando i prefissi ortho, meta e para, abbreviati rispettivamente in o, m e p, oppure utilizzando numeri come 1,2- per ortho, 1,3- per meta e 1,4- per para. 
Se i due sostituenti sono diversi, vengono numerati ed elencati in ordine alfabetico.
Quando uno dei sostituenti conferisce un nome comune al composto, il composto viene nominato come un derivato di quella molecola madre.
Per denominare i derivati del benzene polisostituiti con più di due sostituenti, i numeri sono usati per indicare le posizioni dei sostituenti.
Ai sostituenti vengono assegnati i numeri più bassi possibili e sono elencati in ordine alfabetico.
Se un sostituente impartisce un nome comune, gli viene assegnato uno locante, e il composto viene nominato come derivato di quella molecola madre.

Quando sull'anello benzenico è presente più di un sostituente, la nomenclatura IUPAC dipende dal numero di sostituenti presenti.

Per i derivati del benzene disostituiti, con due gruppi attaccati all'anello benzenico, sono possibili tre isomeri costituzionali. Consideriamo ad esempio il dimetilbenzene, spesso chiamato xilene, dove il secondo gruppo metilico può essere sostituito al secondo, terzo o quarto carbonio. La posizione relativa dei sostituenti è rappresentata dai prefissi orto, meta o para. Tali termini possono essere rappresentati anche con una sola lettera; orto come 'o', meta come 'm' e para come 'p.' I numeri possono anche essere usati per indicare la posizione relativa dei gruppi collegati come 1,2- per orto, 1,3- per meta e 1,4- per para. Naming benzene rings with multiple groups depends on how many substituents are attached. For benzene derivatives with two groups, three constitutional isomers are possible. The position of each group is described with IUPAC naming rules.

For disubstituted benzene compounds, the relative positions can be shown with ortho, meta, and para. These terms are also written as o, m, and p. They can also be written with numbers, such as 1,2- for ortho, 1,3- for meta, and 1,4- for para. Dimethyl benzene, also called xylene, is a common example of this pattern because the second methyl group can attach at the second, third, or fourth carbon.

When the two substituents are different, they are numbered and listed in alphabetical order before benzene. If one substituent belongs to a common name, the compound is named as a derivative of that parent compound. For polysubstituted benzene derivatives, which have three or more substituents, numbers show the positions of the attached groups, and the lowest possible numbers are assigned to each group. The substituents are then listed in alphabetical order, and if a common name is present, it gets locant 1 and the molecule is named as a derivative of that parent compound.
