Polymer Classification: Architecture

Polymers can be classified as linear or branched according to the unique architecture of the polymer chain.
Linear polymers have minimal to no branching at all. Importantly, in the monomer, substituent groups are not considered to be branches.
In branched polymers, secondary polymer chain branches are connected to the main polymer chain. They can have different structural variations.
During polymerization, if the site of polymer growth shifts from the edge of the polymer chain to other areas, branching occurs.
To note the impact of branching, consider polyethylene. The high-density polyethylene variant is linear, while the low-density polyethylene variant is heavily branched.
Consequently, the high-density variant exhibits a high melting point and rigidity due to the efficient close-packing and increased dispersion forces.
In polymers, additional structural variation is achieved by introducing covalent cross-links between polymer chains. For example, the vulcanization of rubber leads to disulfide cross-links between the polymer chains.

Polymers are classified as linear or branched on the basis of their chain architecture. The polymer chains in linear polymers have a long chain-like structure with minimal to no branching at all. Even if a polymer features large substituent groups on the monomer, which appear as branches to the skeleton, it is not considered a branched polymer. A branched polymer contains secondary polymer chains that arise from the main polymer chain. The branching occurs when the polymer growth shifts from the edge of the growing polymer to other areas in the chain. Similar to small molecules, branching prevents close packing, and the open structure minimizes the locations where dispersion forces can act between two polymer chains.
Consider the example of ethylene polymerization. Different grades of polyethylene are prepared by altering the polymerization conditions. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is one of them. As the name indicates, it exhibits high density due to the close packing of linear polymer chains with minimum branching. This polymer melts at 135 &#176;C and is used to manufacture relatively hard objects such as bottle caps, television cabinets, etc. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is another grade of polyethylene&#8212;a low-density polymer due to the extensive branching in the polymer chain. The melt transition temperature of this polymer is 120 &#176;C, lower than high-density polyethylene. It is used to make flexible objects such as squeeze bottles, plastic carry bags, etc. The structures of high-density polyethylene and low-density polyethylene are shown in Figure 1.

Some modifications to the polymer chain structures are achieved by post-processing; for example, vulcanization of rubber. During vulcanization, sulfur reacts with polyisoprene to replace some C&#8211;H bonds with disulfide bonds. These disulfide bonds can connect different polyisoprene chains, and this type of bond is known as cross-linking. The cross-linking increases the rigidity of the polymer because most of the chains are linked. As a result, the relative movement of adjacent chains is diminished. So, the rigidity and elasticity of the rubber are tuned by controlling the amount of sulfur used for vulcanization.

Polymer chains can be classified by their shape and by how their chains connect. Linear polymers have long chain-like structures with little or no branching. Even when a monomer has large substituent groups that look like branches, the polymer is not considered branched if those groups are part of the main chain structure.

Branched polymers contain secondary chains that grow out from the main polymer chain. This branching happens when polymer growth shifts away from the edge of the growing chain and starts in other parts of the molecule. Branching keeps chains from packing closely together, so fewer dispersion forces can act between neighboring polymer chains.

Ethylene polymerization shows how chain architecture changes polymer properties. By changing the polymerization conditions, different grades of polyethylene can be made. High-density polyethylene, or HDPE, has mostly linear chains with very little branching. Because the chains pack closely, HDPE has a high density, melts at 135 °C, and is used for harder items such as bottle caps and television cabinets.

Low-density polyethylene, or LDPE, has much more branching in its chains. The open structure gives it a lower density and a lower melt transition temperature of 120 °C. LDPE is used for flexible products such as squeeze bottles and plastic carry bags.

Some polymers are also changed after they are formed. Rubber can be vulcanized, which means sulfur reacts with polyisoprene and replaces some C–H bonds with disulfide bonds. These disulfide bonds can link different polyisoprene chains together, a process called cross-linking. Cross-linking makes the polymer more rigid because the chains cannot move past each other as easily. By controlling how much sulfur is used, the rigidity and elasticity of rubber can be adjusted.
