Oltre agli alogenuri di idrogeno, gli alogeni sono un'altra classe di reagenti elettrofili che reagiscono con i dieni coniugati per formare prodotti di addizione 1,2 e 1,4.
Qui, i numeri designano la modalità di addizione dell'elettrofilo.
Quando l'1,3-butadiene viene trattato con bromo, uno dei legami π attacca il centro elettrofilo sull'alogeno polarizzato, spostando uno ione bromuro e formando uno ione bromonio intermedio.
Successivamente, lo ione bromuro spostato attacca l'intermedio in uno dei carboni, provocando l'apertura dell'anello.

I dieni coniugati reagiscono con gli alogeni in modo simile. Tuttavia, oltre al dialogenuro 1,2, formano anche un dialogenuro 1,4. Il meccanismo prevede due passaggi.

Innanzitutto, un attacco nucleofilo da parte di uno dei legami π del diene sul centro elettrofilo della molecola di alogeno polarizzato forma uno ione alonio intermedio. Halogen addition to 1,3-butadiene can give two different products. Because 1,3-butadiene is a conjugated diene, it reacts with halogens in a way that is similar to an alkene, but it can form both a 1,2-dihalide and a 1,4-dihalide.

The reaction begins when one of the diene pi bonds attacks the electrophilic part of the polarized halogen molecule. This forms a cyclic halonium ion intermediate. The displaced halide ion then attacks the intermediate at C2 to give the 1,2-product or at C4 to give the 1,4-addition product.

The product ratio depends on temperature. Low temperature favors the 1,2-product, while high temperature favors the 1,4-product. This makes halogen addition to 1,3-butadiene a clear example of how reaction conditions can change the main product.
