Sulla base del meccanismo, le reazioni organiche possono essere ampiamente classificate come ioniche, radicaliche e pericicliche. Mentre le reazioni ioniche e radicaliche hanno intermedi ben definiti, le reazioni pericicliche procedono senza intermedi.
Esistono tre classi di reazioni pericicliche: reazioni elettrocicliche, reazioni di cicloaddizione e riarrangiamenti sigmatropici.
In una reazione elettrociclica, le estremità di un sistema π coniugato si uniscono per formare un nuovo legame σ, risultando in un prodotto ciclico con un legame π inferiore al reagente.
Nelle reazioni di cicloaddizione, due diversi sistemi di π interagiscono per formare un anello, con due legami π dei reagenti, trasformandosi in due nuovi legami σ.
Un riarrangiamento sigmatropico comporta il movimento netto di un legame σ da una posizione all'altra.

Le reazioni pericicliche sono reazioni organiche che si verificano tramite un meccanismo concertato senza generare intermedi. Le reazioni procedono attraverso il movimento degli elettroni in un circuito chiuso per formare uno stato di transizione ciclico, dove la riorganizzazione dei legami σ e π produce prodotti specifici.

Le reazioni pericicliche possono essere classificate in tre categorie: reazioni elettrocicliche, reazioni di cicloaddizione e riarrangiamenti sigmatropici. Le reazioni elettrocicliche e i riarrangiamenti sigmatropici sono reazioni intramolecolari, mentre le reazioni di cicloaddizione sono processi intermolecolari. Le sottoclassi possono essere differenziate in base al numero e al tipo di legami rotti e formati durante la reazione.

Pericyclic reactions are organic reactions that happen through a concerted mechanism, which means they proceed in one step without intermediates. Electrons move in a closed loop to form a cyclic transition state. In that transition state, the sigma and pi bonds rearrange to give specific products.

These reactions are grouped into three classes: electrocyclic reactions, cycloaddition reactions, and sigmatropic rearrangements. Electrocyclic reactions and sigmatropic rearrangements occur within one molecule, so they are intramolecular. Cycloaddition reactions involve two reacting molecules, so they are intermolecular.

The three subclasses differ by the bonds that are broken and formed. In an electrocyclic reaction, one pi bond is broken in the reactant and one sigma bond is formed in the product. In a cycloaddition reaction, two pi bonds are broken and two sigma bonds are formed. In a sigmatropic rearrangement, no pi bond is broken. Instead, a sigma bond migrates while nearby pi bonds are rearranged.

Pericyclic reactions also have several key features. Solvent polarity does not affect the reaction rate, and catalysts are not required. They can be activated by heat or light. The product configuration depends on the number of electrons taking part in the reaction, which is linked to the number of conjugated double bonds. These reactions are stereospecific, and that behavior can be explained by the pi molecular orbital symmetries of the reactants and products.
