What is an Experiment?

Un esperimento è un approccio sistematico per dimostrare o confutare un'ipotesi e scoprire nuove conoscenze. La statistica viene spesso utilizzata per interpretare i risultati di un esperimento.
Prendi in considerazione un esperimento per determinare la relazione tra l'uso del telefono cellulare e la qualità del sonno tra gli studenti universitari.
Questi studenti, denominati materie, sono divisi in due gruppi. Uno è sperimentale, mentre l'altro è un gruppo di controllo. Solo il gruppo sperimentale è autorizzato a utilizzare i telefoni cellulari trenta minuti prima di coricarsi, mentre il gruppo di controllo funge da standard di confronto.
I ricercatori registrano quindi il numero di ore di sonno e la latenza o variabili del sonno, ovvero le caratteristiche dei soggetti che vengono esaminati, misurati e interpretati.
Le variabili sono di due tipi: dipendenti e indipendenti.
L'utilizzo del telefono cellulare è una variabile indipendente controllata dai ricercatori e le ore di sonno e la latenza del sonno sono variabili dipendenti che vengono misurate e registrate.
Infine, il test di ipotesi viene utilizzato per dedurre se i cambiamenti osservati nella qualità del sonno nel gruppo sperimentale rispetto al gruppo di controllo sono statisticamente significativi.

cos'è un esperimento?

Un esperimento è un'attività pianificata e svolta in condizioni controllate. Lo scopo di un esperimento è quello di indagare la relazione tra due variabili. Quando una variabile provoca un cambiamento in un'altra, chiamiamo la prima variabile: variabile esplicativa o indipendente. La seconda variabile, è chiamata risposta o variabile dipendente. In un esperimento casuale, il ricercatore manipola i valori della variabile esplicativa e misura i cambiamenti risultanti nella variabile di risposta. I diversi valori della variabile esplicativa sono chiamati trattamenti. Un'unità sperimentale è un singolo oggetto o individuo da misurare. Prendi come esempio che vuoi studiare l'efficacia della vitamina E nella prevenzione delle malattie. Recluti un gruppo di soggetti e chiedi loro se assumono regolarmente vitamina E. Noti che i soggetti che assumono vitamina E mostrano in media una salute migliore rispetto a quelli che non la assumono. Ciò dimostra che la vitamina E è efficace nella prevenzione delle malattie? Non è così. Ci sono molte differenze tra i due gruppi rispetto al consumo di vitamina E. Le persone che assumono vitamina E regolarmente spesso adottano altre misure per migliorare la propria salute: esercizio fisico, dieta, altri integratori vitaminici e scelta di non fumare. Ognuno di questi fattori potrebbe influenzare la salute. Come descritto, questo studio non dimostra che la vitamina E sia la chiave per la prevenzione delle malattie. Ulteriori variabili che possono influenzare uno studio sono chiamate variabili nascoste. Per dimostrare che la variabile esplicativa sta causando un cambiamento nella variabile di risposta, è necessario isolare la variabile esplicativa. Il ricercatore deve progettare il suo esperimento in modo tale che ci sia una sola differenza tra i gruppi confrontati: i trattamenti previsti. Ciò si ottiene mediante l'assegnazione casuale di unità sperimentali ai gruppi di trattamento. Quando ai soggetti vengono assegnati i trattamenti in modo casuale, tutte le potenziali variabili in agguato vengono distribuite equamente tra i gruppi. A questo punto, l’unica differenza tra i gruppi è quella imposta dal ricercatore. Pertanto, i diversi risultati misurati nella variabile di risposta devono essere il risultato diretto dei diversi trattamenti. In questo modo, un esperimento può dimostrare una connessione di causa-effetto tra le variabili esplicative e di risposta. Random assignment in experiments helps researchers test cause and effect between two variables. An experiment is a planned activity carried out under controlled conditions. It is used to study how one variable affects another. The variable that causes change is the explanatory or independent variable. The variable that changes in response is the response or dependent variable.

In a randomized experiment, the researcher changes the explanatory variable and measures the response variable. The different values of the explanatory variable are called treatments. An experimental unit is the single object or individual that is measured. This structure lets the researcher compare treatment groups under the same planned conditions.

A simple health example shows why random assignment matters. Suppose a researcher wants to test whether vitamin E helps prevent disease. If people are only asked whether they already take vitamin E, the group that takes vitamin E may look healthier on average. But that result does not prove vitamin E is the reason.

Other differences can affect the outcome. People who take vitamin E regularly may also exercise more, eat better, take other vitamin supplements, or choose not to smoke. These extra influences are called lurking variables. They can cloud a study and make it hard to tell which factor is really causing the change.

To isolate the explanatory variable, the researcher must design the experiment so that the treatment is the only planned difference between the groups. This is done by random assignment of experimental units to treatment groups. Random assignment spreads potential lurking variables more equally among the groups. Then differences in the response variable can be linked to the treatments themselves.
