La coppia, o momento di una forza, è la capacità di una forza di ruotare un corpo attorno a un punto o un asse che non si trova nella linea d'azione della forza. È una quantità vettoriale.
Si consideri l'esempio di un volano, in cui viene applicata una forza per ruotare il volano attorno al punto O.
Qui, il braccio del momento è la distanza perpendicolare dal punto O alla linea di azione della forza.
L'entità della forza viene moltiplicata per il braccio del momento per ottenere l'entità del momento. Quindi, l'unità per il momento di una forza è il Newton-metro.
La sua grandezza è massima quando la forza applicata è tangenziale al volano.
La regola della mano destra viene utilizzata per determinare la direzione del momento. Se le dita arricciate rappresentano la rotazione causata dal momento, allora il pollice rappresenta la direzione del momento.

Il momento di una forza, anche conosciuto come coppia, misura la capacità della forza di creare moto rotazionale in un corpo intorno ad un asse. È una grandezza vettoriale, il che significa che ha sia magnitudine che direzione. Questo concetto è ampiamente utilizzato in ingegneria, fisica e meccanica.

Consideriamo un semplice esempio di un volano che viene fatto ruotare intorno ad un punto O, applicando una forza ad esso. In questo caso, il braccio di leva è la distanza perpendicolare tra il punto O e la linea di azione della forza. La magnitudine del momento è calcolata moltiplicando la magnitudine della forza per il braccio di leva. Questa quantità ha l'unità di newton-metro (N-m).

Il momento massimo si verifica quando la forza applicata è tangente al volano, in quanto è perpendicolare al raggio del volano. La magnitudine del momento aumenta anche con la magnitudine della forza applicata e la lunghezza del braccio di leva.

Torque, or the moment of a force, describes how a force can make an object turn about an axis. It is a vector quantity, so it has both size and direction. This idea is important in physics, mechanics, and engineering.

A simple flywheel example shows how torque works. The flywheel rotates about point O when a force is applied to it. The moment arm is the perpendicular distance from point O to the line of action of the force. The moment, in newton-meter (N-m), is found by multiplying the force by the moment arm.

The largest moment happens when the force acts tangentially to the flywheel. In that case, the force is perpendicular to the radius of the flywheel. The moment also gets larger when the applied force is larger or when the moment arm is longer.

The right-hand rule gives the direction of the moment. If the fingers of the right hand curl in the direction of the rotation, the thumb points along the moment direction. By convention, counterclockwise motion is positive, and clockwise motion is negative. This helps in analyzing machines and structures and in predicting how mechanical systems behave.
