Considera un uomo che estrae un chiodo da un muro di legno usando un piede di porco. Il piede di porco tocca il muro nel punto A. L'uomo applica una forza verticale F1 sull'impugnatura del piede di porco, mentre ci vuole una forza F2 sull'artiglio per estrarre l'unghia. Determina la forza minima che l'uomo richiede per estrarre il chiodo.
Nel punto A, il momento dovuto alla forza F1 può essere espresso come la somma del prodotto dell'entità della forza e delle distanze perpendicolari. Sostituendo i valori, è possibile determinare il momento in A dovuto a F1.
Allo stesso modo, risolvendo la forza F2 all'artiglio nelle sue componenti, il momento dovuto a F2 nel punto A può essere determinato utilizzando la componente seno di F2.
Poiché il momento della forza, F1 è più piccolo di F2, la forza F1 è insufficiente per rimuovere l'unghia.
Confrontando sia le equazioni del momento della forza che sostituendo il valore, è possibile determinare la forza minima richiesta per estrarre il chiodo.

Comprendere la formulazione scalare del momento di una forza e applicarla correttamente attraverso la risoluzione dei problemi è cruciale nella progettazione e nell'analisi dei sistemi meccanici. Ecco i passaggi per risolvere i problemi con il momento di una forza:

 <li>Identificare l'asse o il punto rispetto al quale viene calcolato il momento. In alcuni casi, viene fornito l'asse o il punto rispetto al quale è necessario calcolare il momento netto. Tuttavia, in altri casi, il problema richiede di selezionare un asse o un punto appropriato.</li>
 <li>Calcolare la distanza perpendicolare tra la forza e l'asse o il punto. La distanza perpendicolare è la distanza più breve tra la forza e l'asse o il punto scelto.</li>
 <li>Calcolare il momento di ogni forza. In questo passaggio, vengono moltiplicate le magnitudini delle singole forze e le loro distanze rispetto all'asse o al punto scelto per calcolare i rispettivi momenti.  <li>Determinare l'effetto del momento netto. Se il momento netto è zero, non c'è moto rotazionale. Se il momento netto è negativo, l'oggetto ruoterà in senso orario e se il momento netto è positivo, l'oggetto ruoterà in senso antiorario.</li>
 <li>Risolvere il problema. L'ultimo passo della risoluzione dei problemi consiste nell'utilizzare il momento netto calcolato peal fine di risolvere il problema dato. Ad esempio, se è necessario calcolare l'accelerazione angolare di un oggetto, il momento netto che agisce sull'oggetto viene diviso per il momento di inerzia dell'oggetto. </li>

Start by drawing a free-body diagram, or FBD. An FBD is a sketch that shows every force acting on the system. Each force must be identified and included.

Next, identify the axis or point about which the moment is calculated. In some problems, that axis or point is given. In other cases, you must choose a suitable one. Then find the perpendicular distance, which is the shortest distance between the force and the axis or point.

After that, calculate the moment of each force. This is done by multiplying the force magnitude by its perpendicular distance. The moment is a vector quantity, and its direction is perpendicular to the plane of the force and the chosen axis or point.

Add the moments algebraically to find the net moment. Then interpret the result. If the net moment is zero, there is no rotational motion. If it is negative, the object rotates clockwise. If it is positive, the object rotates counterclockwise.

Use the net moment to solve the problem. For example, if angular acceleration is needed, divide the net moment by the moment of inertia of the object.
