Il momento è la tendenza di un corpo a ruotare attorno a un punto o un asse quando viene applicata una forza su di esso.
Le forze applicate a un corpo che non passano attraverso il baricentro creano momenti; la somma vettoriale di tutti questi momenti che agiscono su un corpo è nota come momento risultante.
Considera due trattori che tirano il palo per abbatterlo. Qui, due forze agiscono sul polo, F1 nel punto A e F2 nel punto B. Queste forze sono espresse in forma vettoriale cartesiana.
Queste forze agiscono alle distanze rA e rB dal punto di riferimento O.
Il momento di queste forze può essere calcolato utilizzando il prodotto incrociato della forza e la distanza perpendicolare dal punto di riferimento.
Per trovare il momento risultante, i momenti M1 e M2 vengono sommati e ulteriormente espressi nella forma vettoriale cartesiana.
Infine, l'espansione dei determinanti utilizzando il prodotto vettoriale incrociato determina il momento risultante che agisce sul polo come vettore cartesiano.

Quando una forza viene applicata a un oggetto, la tendenza dell'oggetto a ruotare attorno a un punto è conosciuta come il suo momento. Se più forze agiscono su un oggetto, la somma dei momenti di tutte le forze che agiscono su un corpo può essere espressa come il momento risultante del sistema. Il momento risultante può essere considerato una grandezza vettoriale che può essere sommata e sottratta come qualsiasi altro vettore.

Il momento risultante di un sistema di forze può essere calcolato attraverso la formulazione vettoriale. Ad esempio, se consideriamo due forze, F₁ e F₂, che agiscono su un palo nei punti A e B, rispettivamente, il momento risultante di queste forze può essere espresso come:

Mr = (rA x F1) + (rB x F2)

dove rA e rB sono i vettori posizione da un punto fisso ai punti A e B, rispettivamente. Il prodotto r x F è noto come momento della forza e può essere espresso in forma di determinante. Considerare il prodotto vettoriale del vettore posizione con il vettore forza tiene conto della direzione della forza e del punto intorno al quale causa il movimento di rotazione.

Here, rA and rB are position vectors from a fixed point to A and B.
