Considera un ciclista che pedala su una bicicletta. Quando viene esercitata una forza sul pedale, l'albero motore ruota in modo tale che la catena attaccata all'albero motore eserciti una forza sugli ingranaggi della ruota.
Quando si stabilisce un sistema di coordinate, la forza tangenziale sugli ingranaggi è lungo l'asse x, mentre il raggio degli ingranaggi è il braccio del momento espresso in termini di vettore di posizione.
Qui, il momento di forza attorno al punto O è lungo la direzione y perpendicolare sia al vettore di forza che a quello di posizione ed è espresso come prodotto incrociato dei vettori di posizione e forza.
Il prodotto incrociato può essere risolto esprimendo il coefficiente delle componenti della forza e del vettore di posizione sotto forma di determinante.
Espandendo il determinante, la componente del momento lungo l'asse x è espressa in termini delle componenti y e z del vettore forza e posizione.
Allo stesso modo, esprimendo le sue altre due componenti in termini di forza e componenti vettoriali di posizione, il momento di una forza può essere espresso in forma vettoriale cartesiana.

Quando una forza viene applicata su un oggetto, può causare la rotazione di quell'oggetto su un asse. Il momento di una forza, anche conosciuto come coppia, misura la capacità della forza di causare quella rotazione. Nel caso di un ciclista che pedala su una bicicletta, la forza esercitata sul pedale causa la rotazione dell'albero a gomito, che a sua volta fa girare la ruota. Il momento della forza esercitata sul pedale guida la rotazione della ruota.

Prima di tutto, si stabilisce un sistema di coordinate per capire come funziona il momento di una forza. Prendiamo come esempio una bicicletta. Si stabilisce l'asse x' in modo che sia tangente alla ruota, l'asse y' tale che sia perpendicolare all'asse x' e punti verso l'alto, e l'asse z' tale che possa puntare verso l'esterno dalla ruota.

Quando il ciclista esercita una forza sul pedale, l'albero a gomito ruota cosicchè la catena collegata all'albero a gomito esercita una forza sull'asse della ruota. La forza esercitata sull'asse è quindi lungo l'asse x'. Il raggio dell'asse è il braccio di leva, che può essere espresso in termini del vettore posizione.

Il momento di una forza rispetto al punto O è lungo la direzione z', perpendicolare sia alla forza che al vettore posizione. È espresso come prodotto vettoriale del vettore posizione e del vettore forza.

Il prodotto vettoriale può essere risolto esprimendo il coefficiente delle componenti del vettore forza e del vettore posizione nella forma di un determinante. Il determinante può essere espanso per risolvere ogni componente del momento di forza.

Ad esempio, la componente del momento lungo l'asse x' è espressa in termini delle componenti y' e z' del vettore forza e del vettore posizione. Allo stesso modo, le altre due componenti del momento possono essere espresse nella forma di un vettore cartesiano.

Comprendere il momento di una forza è importante in molti campi della scienza e dell'ingegneria. Può aiutarci a calcolare le forze su oggetti come ingranaggi, carrucole e leve, e può aiutare nella progettazione di macchine che convertono le forze in movimento. Torque, or the moment of a force, explains how a force can make an object rotate about an axis. A bicycle is a clear example. When a cyclist presses on the pedal, the crankshaft turns and helps drive the wheel.

To analyze this motion, a coordinate system is set up first. The x-axis is tangential to the wheel, the y-axis is perpendicular to the x-axis and points upward, and the z-axis points outward from the wheel. In this setup, the force on the wheel axle lies along the x-axis.

The axle radius acts as the moment arm, and it can be written using the position vector. The moment of the force about point O points in the z-direction because it is perpendicular to both the force and the position vector. It is found using the cross product of the position and force vectors.

The cross product can be calculated by writing the force and position components in determinant form. Expanding the determinant gives the x-, y-, and z-components of the moment. The x-component, for example, depends on the y and z components of the force and position vectors.

Knowing how to find the moment of a force is useful in science and engineering. It helps with problems involving gears, pulleys, and levers. It also supports the design of machines that turn force into motion, including the bicycle crankshaft and chain system.
