I telai sono generalmente strutture rigide e stazionarie, spesso costituite da elementi collegati a perni per formare un sistema stabilizzato per supportare carichi applicati esternamente.

Sono ampiamente utilizzati come supporto strutturale in travi e colonne di edifici, telai di automobili e attrezzature per l'edilizia come gru ed escavatori.
Per analizzare un telaio, si consideri l'esempio di una gru in equilibrio che solleva un carico W.
Viene disegnato un diagramma a corpo libero della gru per determinare le forze esterne che agiscono sul telaio.
Inoltre, ogni membro del diagramma di corpo libero viene analizzato separatamente per identificare le forze note e sconosciute. Generalmente, i membri a due forze sono considerati per primi.

Frames are important parts of many mechanical and structural systems used every day. They are valued for stability and for their ability to bear heavy loads. A frame is built from two-force members and multi-force members, and the parts are connected with pin joints. Trusses are different because they are made entirely of two-force members.

Frames appear in many practical settings. They can support beams and columns in buildings. They are also used in automobile chassis construction. In the construction industry, frames help support equipment such as cranes and excavators.

Analyzing a frame means finding the forces acting on each member. A free-body diagram is drawn first to show the external forces on the full structure. Then each member is studied separately to identify known and unknown forces. Two-force members are analyzed first to find the forces at each end of the member. Next, the forces at each connecting point of multi-force members are determined. This step-by-step analysis reveals the forces in all members and helps support safe design and operation.
