Le titolazioni potenziometriche determinano la concentrazione di un analita misurando la differenza di potenziale tra l'elettrodo di riferimento e l'elettrodo indicatore nella soluzione dopo l'aggiunta del titolante.
Una variazione improvvisa della curva di titolazione, ottenuta tracciando i potenziali rispetto al volume del titolante, indica il punto finale della titolazione.
Inoltre, il punto finale può essere identificato in modo più preciso dal massimo della prima curva derivata o dal punto zero della seconda curva derivata.
Le titolazioni potenziometriche possono comportare reazioni acido-base, precipitazione, complessometriche o redox.
Le titolazioni acido-base utilizzano tipicamente elettrodi di vetro per misurare il pH, che viene tracciato rispetto al volume del titolante per identificare il punto finale.
Le titolazioni per precipitazione misurano il potenziale derivato dalle variazioni di concentrazione nell'anione o nel catione dovute alla precipitazione con un elettrodo iono-selettivo tramite l'equazione di Nernst.

Il grafico risultante è chiamato curva di titolazione. Le curve derivate si ottengono tracciando la derivata della curva di titolazione rispetto al volume di titolante aggiunto. Aiutano a identificare il punto finale in modo più preciso. La derivata in genere presenta un punto di massimo o di minimo in corrispondenza del punto finale, consentendo una determinazione più accurata del punto finale. La titolazione potenziometrica è altamente versatile e può essere utilizzata per reazioni acido-base, di precipitazione, complessometriche o di ossidoriduzione. Potentiometric titration is a quantitative analytical method used to find the concentration of an analyte by measuring the potential difference between two electrodes in a solution. The endpoint is the point where this potential changes sharply. It usually appears when the stoichiometric reaction between the analyte and the titrant is complete.

To find the endpoint, the measured potential difference is plotted against the volume of titrant added. This graph is called a titration curve. A derivative curve can also be made by plotting the change in the titration curve with respect to titrant volume. The endpoint is easier to spot on this curve because it often shows a maximum or minimum at that point.

This method is useful for several kinds of reactions, including acid-base, precipitation, complexometric, and redox titrations. Acid-base titrations often use glass electrodes to measure pH as titrant volume increases. Precipitation titrations use ion-selective electrodes that respond to a specific ion in the solution. Redox titrations use inert metal electrodes such as platinum, and the titration curve can help choose a suitable visual indicator. Complexometric titrations use ion-selective electrodes to track metal-ion concentration as EDTA is added.
