Nella polarografia, una tecnica voltammetrica classica, viene applicato uno sweep di potenziale lineare a un elettrodo di mercurio a goccia o DME e viene misurata la corrente risultante.
Nel DME, una piccola gocciolina di mercurio si forma sulla punta del capillare e scende continuamente, creando una nuova superficie dell'elettrodo per ogni misurazione.
Il grafico corrente-potenziale risultante, noto come polarogramma, fornisce informazioni sul potenziale di semionda, sulla corrente residua, sulla corrente limite e sulla corrente di diffusione. La corrente di diffusione è direttamente proporzionale alla concentrazione dell'analita nella soluzione.

La polarografia è una tecnica voltammetrica classica usata per analizzare le reazioni elettrochimiche. Questo metodo applica una scansione di potenziale lineare a un elettrodo a mercurio a caduta (DME), e misura la corrente risultante. Un elettrodo a mercurio a caduta di solito è utilizzato come un elettrodo di lavoro nella polarografia. È formato da un tubo capillare riempito di mercurio, dove una minuscola goccia si forma sulla punta. Questa goccia cade continuamente dal capillare, creando una nuova superficie dell'elettrodo per ogni misurazione.

Durante una misurazione polarografica, il potenziale applicato al DME varia linearmente nel tempo. La voltammetria idrodinamica è diversa dalla polarografia in quanto viene usato un elettrodo metallico al posto dell'elettrodo a goccia di mercurio, come elettrodo di lavoro solido. Questa tecnica applica un potenziale all'elettrodo di lavoro solido e misura la corrente risultante. Un voltammogramma si ottiene variando il potenziale su un intervallo specifico, che produce un grafico della corrente in funzione del potenziale applicato. A differenza della polarografia, la voltammetria idrodinamica elimina le oscillazioni di corrente osservate nei polarogrammi e dovute alla formazione di gocce di mercurio.

Polarography and hydrodynamic voltammetry are voltammetric techniques used to study electrochemical reactions. They track the current that flows as the electrode potential changes. In polarography, the key working electrode is a dropping mercury electrode, or DME.

A DME uses a capillary tube filled with mercury. A tiny mercury droplet forms at the tip and then drops away. This gives a fresh electrode surface for each measurement. During the test, the potential applied to the DME changes linearly over time.

As the potential shifts, electroactive species in the solution can undergo reduction or oxidation at the electrode surface. The measured current is plotted against the potential to make a polarogram, which is the current-potential curve for polarography. This method has been used in analytical chemistry, environmental analysis, and electrochemical research.

Hydrodynamic voltammetry uses a solid metal electrode instead of a mercury drop electrode. The potential is varied over a set range, and the resulting current is recorded. The output is a voltammogram, a plot of current versus applied potential. Unlike polarograms, voltammograms do not show the current oscillations caused by mercury drop formation.
