Conservation of Mechanical Energy

Considera uno pneumatico che oscilla come un pendolo avanti e indietro sotto l'influenza della forza gravitazionale. Si presume che il sistema pendolo-Terra sia un sistema isolato.
Mentre il pendolo oscilla, l'energia del sistema varia avanti e indietro tra l'energia potenziale gravitazionale e l'energia cinetica, mentre l'energia meccanica del sistema, la somma delle due, rimane costante.

L'energia meccanica E di un sistema è la somma della sua energia potenziale U e dell'energia cinetica K degli oggetti al suo interno. Cosa succede a questa energia meccanica quando solo le forze conservative causano trasferimenti di energia all'interno del sistema, cioè quando forze di attrito e di resistenza non agiscono sugli oggetti nel sistema? Si assuma inoltre che il sistema sia isolato dal suo ambiente; in altre parole, nessuna forza esterna proveniente da un oggetto esterno al sistema causa cambiamenti energetici all'interno del sistema.

Quando una forza conservativa compie un lavoro W su un oggetto all'interno di un sistema, quella forza trasferisce energia tra l'energia cinetica K dell'oggetto e l'energia potenziale U del sistema. In un sistema isolato, dove solo forze conservative causano cambiamenti energetici, l'energia cinetica e l'energia potenziale possono cambiare; tuttavia, la loro somma, l'energia meccanica E del sistema, non può cambiare. Questo risultato è chiamato principio di conservazione dell'energia meccanica.

Il principio di conservazione dell'energia meccanica ci permette di risolvere problemi che sarebbero difficili da risolvere usando solo le leggi di Newton. Quando l'energia meccanica di un sistema è conservata, la somma dell'energia cinetica e dell'energia potenziale in un istante può essere correlata alla loro somma in un altro istante senza trovare il lavoro svolto dalle forze coinvolte. Un grande vantaggio nell'usare la conservazione dell'energia invece delle leggi del moto di Newton è che è possibile passare dallo stato iniziale allo stato finale senza considerare tutto il moto intermedio.

Mechanical energy in an isolated system is the total of kinetic energy and potential energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, and potential energy is stored energy. The transcript focuses on what happens when energy shifts within a system without outside influence.

In this case, only conservative forces act on the objects in the system. Conservative forces can transfer energy between kinetic energy and potential energy. Friction and drag do not act here, and no external force from outside the system changes the energy inside it.

When a conservative force does work on an object, it changes how the energy is shared between kinetic and potential forms. The kinetic energy and potential energy can each change. However, their sum, called the mechanical energy E, does not change.

This result is known as the principle of conservation of mechanical energy. It is useful for solving problems that are hard to handle with Newton’s laws alone. Instead of tracking every step of the motion, you can compare the initial and final states and relate the total mechanical energy at one instant to the total at another.
