Un oggetto in un campo gravitazionale subisce un'accelerazione a causa della forza gravitazionale.
Utilizzando un pendolo fisico, è possibile misurare il valore dell'accelerazione dovuta alla gravità.
Si consideri un'asta uniforme di lunghezza L e massa m sospesa a un'estremità. La distanza tra il punto di articolazione e il baricentro dell'asta è la metà della lunghezza dell'asta.
Ricordiamo l'equazione per l'inerzia rotazionale di un'asta, che ruota attorno a un asse perpendicolare attraverso il suo centro di massa.
Utilizzando il teorema dell'asse parallelo, viene determinata l'inerzia rotazionale attorno a un asse perpendicolare attraverso un'estremità dell'asta.
Ricorda il periodo di tempo del pendolo fisico. Elevando al quadrato entrambi i lati e sostituendo il valore della distanza tra il punto di rotazione e il centro di massa e il momento d'inerzia, si determina la formula per l'accelerazione dovuta alla gravità.

Un pendolo semplice può essere descritto come una massa puntiforme e un filo. Nel frattempo, un pendolo fisico è qualsiasi oggetto le cui oscillazioni sono simili a un pendolo semplice, ma non possono essere modellate come una massa puntiforme su un filo perché la sua massa è distribuita su una superficie più ampia. Il comportamento di un pendolo fisico può essere modellato utilizzando i principi del moto rotazionale e il concetto di momento d'inerzia. Data la dipendenza di T da g, se la lunghezza di un pendolo e il periodo di oscillazione sono precisamente noti, possono essere utilizzati per misurare l'accelerazione dovuta alla gravità. Questo metodo per determinare la gravità può essere molto accurato.

Un pendolo fisico può anche essere utilizzato per misurare l'accelerazione di caduta libera dovuta alla gravità in un determinato punto sulla superficie della Terra, di cui sono state effettuate migliaia di misurazioni durante la prospezione geofisica.

Measuring Acceleration Due to Gravity

Pendulums can be used to measure the acceleration due to gravity. A simple pendulum is a point mass attached to a string. A physical pendulum is an object that swings in a similar way, but its mass is spread out, so it cannot be treated as a point mass on a string.

A physical pendulum is described using rotational motion and moment of inertia. In both types of pendulum, gravity provides the restoring force that brings the object back toward the middle of its swing. For a simple pendulum, gravity acts at the center of the bob. For a physical pendulum, gravity acts at the center of mass of the object.

The period of a simple pendulum depends on its length and the acceleration due to gravity, g. It does not depend on mass or on the maximum displacement. If the length of a pendulum and its period are known with precision, they can be used to find g.

This method can be very accurate. A physical pendulum can also be used to measure the free-fall acceleration due to gravity at a specific location on Earth’s surface. Thousands of such measurements have been made during geophysical prospecting.
